Now, as an A.C.E. Fellow, she’s continuing to build the knowledge, relationships, and confidence to create more opportunities for students and families in Clayton County.

Our latest DC360 Collaborative brought partners together to share perspectives, ask questions, and continue strengthening a shared vision for thriving schools and neighborhoods across the Douglass Cluster.

Some of the most meaningful learning happens when students have the opportunity to experience it for themselves.

Since opening in 2005, Amana Academy West Atlanta has built expeditionary learning into its approach to education. Students engage in real-world applications, project-based instruction, and experiences that take learning beyond the four walls of the classroom.

For executive director and co-founder, Ehab Jaleel, it’s about creating opportunities for students to actively engage with what they’re learning and make connections between their lessons and the world around them.

After years of waiting for the opportunity to experience Joychella, one Ethos Classical family finally got their chance.

Afterward, the mother shared a reflection with Danielle Mack that stuck with her: “This is what I picture community to be.”

It’s a simple statement, but it captures something important about what schools can make possible. Alongside strong learning experiences, schools can create places where students and families feel connected, welcomed and part of something bigger.

💬 What makes a school community feel welcoming to students and families?

The best ideas don’t have to stay within the walls of one school.

At the first convening of our Special Education Community of Practice with the Center for Learner Equity, school leaders had the opportunity to learn from one another, talk through shared challenges, and begin identifying practices they can take back to their own school communities.

That exchange is an important part of this work. When one school finds a better way to support students, there should be opportunities for others to learn from it.

For Ayana Gabriel Turner, one of the joys of this work is seeing new possibilities for students become real.

A former educator and current RedefinED Atlanta board chair, Ayana recently reflected on visiting the Academy for Innovation in Medicine (AIM) and seeing students excited about a school that connects their education to pathways into healthcare careers.

Experiences like this show what expanding access can look like in practice: students gaining more opportunities to explore their interests, prepare for what comes after graduation and see more possibilities for their futures.

Meet Dariun Maxwell, RedefinED Atlanta’s Program and Operations Manager. 👋🏾

Dariun brings a unique perspective to our work. He began his career as a middle school special education teacher, is an Atlanta Public Schools parent, and now works behind the scenes to help keep the programs and projects that advance our mission moving forward.

Together, those experiences have shaped how he thinks about educational opportunity, particularly the choices and sacrifices families make to find the right educational opportunities for their children.

They’ve also reinforced why this work matters. Expanding access to great public schools isn’t only about what happens inside a classroom. It takes strong schools, informed families, effective organizations, and an education ecosystem working together to create more opportunities for students.

As we celebrate 10 years of RedefinED Atlanta, we’re sharing the perspectives of people like Dariun who help move us toward our vision: every child, in every community, having access to trajectory-changing K-12 public education.
