OPPORTUNITY FOR LOCAL ARTISTS: Astoria Visual Arts and the Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa are pleased to announce their fifth year of collaboration, inviting local artists to submit original artwork for consideration for the hotel's permanent art collection.

This year's theme, Astoria: Home, History & Heart, celebrates the people, places, and stories that shape this remarkable community. Artists are invited to interpret the theme through their own experiences, perspectives, and creative expression.

WHO CAN APPLY: Artists residing in Clatsop or Pacific counties, who work in two-dimensional or wall-mounted media are eligible to apply. All media may be considered.

The Coastal Oregon Artist Residency exhibit, Transformations: Reclaiming the Discarded, is on view for 2 more weekends! Come see the work completed by Midori Hirose and Slayer Rowan, all made during their 4-month residency from items they collected from the Astoria Transfer Station!

Mark your calendar for the artist talk on Saturday, November 7 at 3:00pm. Hear stories from the artists about their experience, learn about the weirdest things they found, and ask questions about the residency.

The last day to catch this show is Sunday, November 8. AVA is open Thursday - Monday, 11am - 3pm, and by appointment.

Now in its ninth year, this partnership program between Recology Western Oregon and AVA continues to enable creative reuse of discarded materials.

Our hearts are full after yesterday's annual Membership Meeting! Thanks so much to all the members that joined us and participated in future plans! You've been part of this wonderful journey with us and have helped shape where AVA is today. 💚 We're so grateful for this wonderful community and what lies ahead!

Dayna Collins was voted onto the board, which is very exciting! Longtime board member Ray Merritt was re-elected, who handles so many weekly things, it's hard to quantify. The artist presentations are always a wonderful reaffirmation to share the impact AVA's programs have toward each individual's growth. Art ed updates are always amazing. AVA currently provides four free weekly art classes for local youth! Arts youth ed is a worthy avenue to invest in... thanks 100 Women Who Care, Auerbach Artist Colony, and Mark Gorman for seeing that!

We have immense gratitude for all those individuals that recognize the vital role the arts play in our lives and communities. The arts are fundamental and deserve to be nurtured, celebrated, and supported. 🌱🎉💚 Thanks to AVA members and supporters who share this belief and collectively make it happen!

AVA's annual Membership Meeting is this Saturday, October 24 from 4-5:30pm! Join us for happy hour as we raise our glasses to another year!

AVA members are at the heart of everything we do, and we're excited to bring everyone together to celebrate! We'll hear from artists who participated in AVA's 2026 programs, work on creative collaborations, conduct board elections, and share exciting updates. Thanatopsis - Contemplations on Death, Grief, and Renewal is a partnership program presented by the Royal Nebeker Gallery at Clatsop Community College and Astoria Visual Arts, September 21 - October 22 featuring an art exhibition at the Royal Nebeker Gallery, four workshops at AVA, and accompanying public events.

Community members are invited to attend all events to reflect on mortality, grief, healing, and the shared experience of loss. All events and workshops are free thanks in part to funding from Oregon Humanities with support from Meyer Memorial Trust.

Opening today! Astoria artists Midori Hirose and Slayer Rowan spent June through September salvaging materials from the waste stream at the Astoria Transfer Station and transformed them into new works of art! As the 2026 recipients of the Coastal Oregon Artist Residency (COAR), they gave discarded materials another chance at life through art.

The Coastal Oregon Artist Residency exhibition opens Saturday, October 10 from 12 - 8pm, with visitors invited to meet the artists from 5:00 to 7:00pm. Our partner Recology Western Oregon rolls out the red carpet for these artists! Don't miss it!

The exhibition will be on view October 10 - November 8 and is open,Thursdays - Mondays from 11am - 3pm at Astoria Visual Arts.

Incredible dye workshop today with Iris Sullivan Daire at AVA! 💛 Participants learned about the plants, materials, and processes behind these brilliant colors while creating their own hand-dyed silk scarf. Such a wonderful afternoon of experimentation and connection. Thank you, Iris, for sharing your incredible knowledge and passion with us—and thank you to everyone who joined us today.

Adoration of Light Workshop
Sunday, October 4, 3-5pm
(Six spots left!)

Join us in welcoming Iris Sullivan Daire to Astoria Visual Arts to teach a hands-on workshop, exploring the vibrant range of yellow botanical dyes. If know know Iris personally or have gotten to spend more than 5 minutes with her, you'll learn something! She is a natural teacher that is vibrantly passionate about her craft - working with natural dyes!

The class is $90 or $80 for AVA Members and includes all materials. Participants will learn the process for dying a silk scarf or accessory, and will get to take it home!

Also, excitingly, this is the first class offered as part of a grant AVA received from the Oregon Cultural Trust! Limited scholarships are available. All participants must pay the minimum material fee of $30.

Art Room After School is starting again soon! We’re thrilled to offer free art classes for Clatsop County youth for a fourth year!

Classes begin October 1 for 5th–8th graders and October 7 for 1st–4th graders, with all classes held in the Art Room at Astoria Middle School.

Kids are invited to explore the colorful, wonderfully unpredictable world of gelli plate printing! In this 5- to 7-week hands-on class, students will make their own reusable gelli plate and learn how to use it to create one-of-a-kind prints. Select prints will then be transformed into a unique collage. The possibilities for expanded creative thinking are endless!

Space is limited and classes fill quickly, so early registration is encouraged. ESL learners are warmly welcomed, instructor .d speaks fluent Spanish. 😍

Classes are free thanks to generous support from the City of Astoria, United Way, and 100 Women Who Care.
