Tonita Cervantes' exhibit "I Am a Human Being" at AVA includes a very powerful 50-minute video featuring interviews, videos and additional photographs. This is a short excerpt of her time spent at Standing Rock in 2016 - 2017. Water protectors came from all over the world, including individuals from 300 different tribes, thousands of allies, and celebrities to stop construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. Conditions were brutal, 800 individuals were jailed (including Tonita), hundreds were gravely injured and two were blinded.

Tonita's exhibit includes numerous additional bodies of photo documentary work. It's on view through September Sept 7, open 11 - 3 and by appointment.

A glimpse of a small part of Tonita Cervantes’ powerful exhibition, I Am a Human Being, on view at Astoria Visual Arts through September 7. Tijuana-US Border 2018 - 2020, Cuba 2015, Veterans and the Homeless in San Fransisco, the Indigenous March and Womens March in Washington DC 2020 - 2022, George Floyd Protests. More to come.

Through documentary photography spanning communities and experiences around the world, Cervantes captures moments of resilience, struggle, dignity, and shared humanity.

DON'T MISS the chance to experience these moving bodies of work in person including a 50-minute video with interviews, videos, and photographs.

AVA is open Thursday - Monday, 11am - 3pm, and by appointment.

That's a wrap on a 5th year of summer Art Camps! Our final camp of the season, Lines & Light, included a lot of experimenting and learning new techniques. Sixty campers explored how lines build forms, movement, texture, pattern and personality. Different types of light and motion made projects come to life.

A huge thank you to our incredible teaching artists Keri Domer, D Valenzuela and Karrin Carson as well as our group leaders, support staff, volunteers, and families. We're especially grateful to the sponsors and community partners who make Art Camp possible. Your support helps keep camp affordable, provides scholarships, and helps with supplies. That truly means the world to the kids and families that participate.

Astoria Artists at Work the Open Studios preview exhibit opens today for Artwalk! This exhibit brings together work by 35 of the 50+ artists participating in the 16th annual Astoria Open Studios Tour. Featuring painting, ceramics, sculpture, photography, fiber art, mixed media, printmaking, woodworking, jewelry, and more, the exhibit offers a glimpse into the wide range of creative practices found throughout Astoria.

The exhibition also serves as an introduction to the artists and artwork visitors can discover during the free, self-guided Open Studios Tour, July 25–26. The exhibit is on view July 11 - August 2 and open Thursday - Sunday, 11:00am - 3:00pm.
