Founded in 1811, Astoria was the site of the first U.S. Post Office West of the Rockies! It has been an iconic place ever since, including serving as the backdrop for iconic films like The Goonies, Kindergarten Cop, Free W***y, and Short Circuit. Established in 1986, the Astoria Downtown Historic District Association hasn't always had a smooth journey. Disinvestment and dwindling interest in the downtown left the organization with few resources by the early 2000s. In 2010, they began using the Main Street Approach to guide their work; initial efforts included developing a fundraising plan and creating vibrant local events. Since then, the program has grown substantially, expanding its work to restore historic buildings, support local businesses, and foster public art. This hard work and dedication earned them recognition as a 2027 Great American Main Street Award semifinalist!
