Arlington Montessori Action Committee - AMAC

Arlington Montessori Action Committee - AMAC AMAC is an organization of Montessori parents and educators whose primary goal is to promote and expand Montessori education. Join our listserv!

https://groups.io/g/AMACArlington We are a countywide group of parents and educators formed in 2006 whose goals are to build community among Montessori families in Arlington, to support Montessori education in Arlington, and to advocate for the growth and the strength of APS’s Montessori program. We are advocates for Montessori and are working for its continued support and expansion in Arlington Public Schools. APS’s Montessori program promotes self-directed learning, healthy self-discipline, and good citizenship. Montessori children learn in an environment that is community-centered, where they have strong ties to adults at school, and receive differentiated instruction from a variety of resources both inside and outside the classroom, including other children. Montessori works for children of diverse backgrounds and abilities, and APS’s Montessori classrooms exhibit this diversity. In short, the Montessori program meets several of the goals in APS’s Strategic Plan, including narrowing the achievement gap, rising achievement for all students, and responsive education.

The Montessori Five Great Lessons are foundational, sweeping narratives introduced at the beginning of each elementary school year to spark children's imagination and provide a big-picture view of the universe. These impressionistic lessons tie together science, history, culture, and mathematics, serving as a launching pad for all further learning in a Cosmic Education framework.

Watch this informational video by The Center for Guided Montessori Studies for a more in depth look at the Five Great Lessons.

AMAC advocates for quality Montessori, in both the public and private sector, in Arlington County. We are made up of a group of unpaid volunteers who do this work because we value the Montessori pedagogy and want to see it applied appropriately for the benefit of the children who attend these programs. We partner with other Montessori programs to present parent education opportunities, and we host community events and activities (such as our popular annual camping trip) for Montessori families. Your membership dues will help to fund all these efforts and allow us to keep our programs at cost or free without having to do the extensive fundraising that most nonprofits have to do. Your membership also allows you the opportunity to vote in the elections for the 2026 Executive Committee.

You do not have to currently have a child in a Montessori program to support us. If you do not wish to get a membership but would like to make a tax deductible monetary donation, you can use the same link.

If you are not sure whether or not you are already a member, you can check this membership list here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1l_MiSDyEc8Yyi_nkmE67hZeTY8C3F-9l3Jm62Fd0XN4/edit?usp=sharing
