USO The USO is for the people who serve. Strengthening the well-being of the people serving in America’s military and their families.

The USO has kept our military men and women connected to family, home and country throughout their time of service – no matter where, how long, or under what conditions they serve. It was founded in preparation for World War II by national leaders who understood that maintaining high morale in a fighting force is vital to a nation’s military success. Over time, the USO has become the vital bridge between Americans and their military service members. The USO is a family of volunteers, sustained by the charitable contributions of millions of generous Americans. We are united in our commitment to support America’s service members by keeping them connected to the people, places and things they love. We do this through countless acts of caring, comfort, connection and support. Our work is America’s most powerful expression of gratitude to the men and women who secure our nation’s freedoms.

One soldier serving in a high-threat environment overseas puts it plainly: “At the end of the day, we've got to accomplish the mission, so we don't mind doing that.”

When ongoing conflict made it difficult to receive mail, the USO stepped in with boxes of hygiene products and snacks. One soldier summed it up simply: “They're an organization that cares about the soldiers a lot ... I would say that they're one of the best friends of the soldiers.”

Essential supplies delivered so soldiers can focus on the mission ahead.

The USS Mount Whitney, a Blue Ridge-class command amphibious ship, operates with a crew of about 300 sailors and other military personnel. From its homeport in Gaeta, Italy, the ship serves as a command platform for operations across Europe and Africa.

With tensions continuing across the Middle East, service members throughout the region are facing an ever-evolving operational environment. During a recent stop in Gaeta, USO staff came aboard the USS Mount Whitney to connect with sailors and Marines and provide crucial resources before the crew headed back to sea.

Weeks and months at sea can make the world feel pretty small, and the days can blur together. That’s why the USO goes aboard — because these moments matter. Our service members matter. And these moments of connection remind them of that.

USO staff and military partners recently worked together to open a new USO Center and create a space where the people serving in Somalia can step away from the pressures of deployment and feel a little closer to home.

Being away from family during deployment means missing more than birthdays and holidays. For one soldier serving overseas, it meant being apart from a fiancée soon after proposing, and missing Christmas and a birthday in the same year.

At the local USO Center, Wi-Fi, phones and computers make it possible to call, email or video chat home. One soldier put it this way: "We found out that they had phones for us to actually contact families, computers, being able to email or Discord home, like actually having a constant communication with our families, it's really nice."

There’s something about being handed a USO Care Package when you’re far from home — the weight of the bag in your hands, the familiar snacks and everyday essentials inside, and the knowledge that someone thought about you while you’re on the front lines.
