At the Armed Services YMCA Child Development Centers, learning happens through meaningful, hands-on experiences that keep children engaged, curious, and excited to explore!

Through the Early Learning Matters (ELM) curriculum, our teachers provide developmentally appropriate learning experiences designed to meet children where they are while supporting their continued growth. From infants exploring their environment through their senses to preschoolers building, creating, problem-solving, and working together, every activity has a purpose. 🧩📚🎨

Developmentally appropriate practice means recognizing that children learn best when experiences are matched to their age, individual abilities, interests, and developmental needs. Our teachers intentionally guide learning while giving children opportunities to make choices, explore ideas, practice new skills, and learn through play.

When children are actively engaged, they aren't just playing—they're developing language, social-emotional skills, creativity, problem-solving abilities, fine and gross motor skills, and confidence that build the foundation for future learning. 💙

From an infant turning the pages of a favorite board book to a preschooler climbing, balancing, and running with confidence, every activity helps build essential skills for lifelong learning.

📖 Fine Motor Skills develop through small movements that strengthen little hands and fingers. Activities like turning book pages, stacking blocks, scribbling with crayons, buttoning, and picking up small objects help children build the coordination they'll need for writing, self-care, and everyday tasks.

🏃 Gross Motor Skills grow through big movements that strengthen muscles and improve balance, coordination, and confidence. Crawling, rolling, climbing, dancing, jumping, and playing outdoors help children develop healthy bodies while encouraging exploration and independence.

At the Armed Services YMCA Child Development Centers, our teachers intentionally plan developmentally appropriate experiences that support both fine and gross motor development from infancy through preschool. Every page turned, every block stacked, and every step taken is another milestone on a child's journey of growth.

The Armed Services YMCA Child Development Center in Arlington is proud to host a Diaper Giveaway for military families in our community!

We know that every little bit helps, and diapers are one of the biggest ongoing expenses for families with young children. Through this giveaway, we're honored to provide a helping hand to those who serve our nation every day.

Don't have a child in diapers? Do not fret, United Through Reading has donated books that highlight military families. Each child will receive a book.

If you're a military family with a little one in need, we invite you to stop by while supplies last!
