A new national poll from The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights finds that voters are increasingly concerned about threats to their rights, democracy, and the 2026 elections. The 2026 Civil Rights Monitor found that 82% of voters are concerned that rights and freedoms are being taken away or rolled back, the highest level recorded in the five-year history of the poll.

The poll, conducted by Brilliant Corners Research, surveyed 1,000 likely voters by phone between August 23 and September 6. It found that concerns about democracy are also at a series high, with 76% of voters saying they believe democracy is under a major threat. At the same time, voters report high motivation to participate in the upcoming midterm elections, with 84% saying they plan to definitely vote in November.

Protecting the freedom to vote was rated as the top civil rights priority, receiving the highest importance rating among white, Black, Hispanic, and Asian American voters as well as among Democrats and Republicans. Overall, 14% of voters identified voting rights as their top issue, tying it with border security and ranking ahead of abortion rights, which 10% selected.

As early voting gets underway in many states, voters can continue to rely on existing mail-in voting procedures for the 2026 midterm elections. On September 14, the US Supreme Court declined to allow the Trump administration to implement new restrictions that would have given the USPS a greater role in determining which voters could receive mail-in ballots. The decision left a lower court order blocking the restrictions in place, allowing states to continue using their existing systems for the November election.

The ruling followed Trump’s Executive Order 14399, issued in March 2026, which took effect in August 2026. The Executive Order required states to adopt a “uniform envelope style” and to submit lists of eligible voters to an online portal. It gave the USPS the authority to refuse to deliver ballots to noncompliant states. In its appeal to the Supreme Court, the Trump administration argued that additional measures like this were needed to preserve election integrity, but that claim was disputed.

Concerns also emerged about whether the new system could function reliably before the midterm elections. A whistleblower report revealed that ballots may never be sent because of systemic and programmatic flaws. Implementing a new federal system shortly before an election could create additional obstacles for state and local election officials, potentially leaving voters uncertain about whether their ballots would reach them in time. Despite knowing about these flaws, the Trump administration remained ready to disenfranchise voters further.

September marked Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, but the need for greater research, better treatment, and improved early detection does not end when the month does. Ovarian cancer is expected to cause nearly 14,000 deaths in the US this year. Despite the burden of the disease, detecting ovarian cancer early remains a significant challenge.

Ovarian cancer is actually the deadliest cancer among women and the number one cause of gynecologic cancer deaths. Additionally, only 15% of patients are diagnosed in early stages. Meaning the vast majority of individuals are diagnosed in advanced stages, their survival rate of 30.8%. This tragic reality is largely due to a lack of early detection testing.
