On , we celebrate the role local communities play in protecting the nature that sustains them. But what does community-led conservation look like? Here are eight great ways communities are leading the way.

We're pleased to spotlight the work of Wildlife Conservation Society Conservation International Belize Maya Forest Trust Osa Conservation (Conservación Osa), as well as our own team members supporting communities around the world.

Communities are protecting biodiversity through leadership, stewardship, and conservation action.

We’re excited to share a major milestone: Coastal 500 has officially surpassed 500 leaders worldwide.

Since launching in 2021, Coastal 500 has become the world’s largest network of local government leaders committed to thriving seas and resilient communities. Together, these leaders now represent more than 2,000 coastal communities and help steward nearly 100,000 square kilometers of coastline and marine ecosystems that close to 4 million people rely on.

This milestone is a powerful reminder that when we invest in local leadership, we see lasting results—from healthier fisheries to stronger communities and greater climate resilience.

We’re proud of how far this network has come and excited for what’s ahead as we deepen engagement, strengthen local capacity, and grow this movement in new countries.

Please join us in celebrating what this means for coastal communities around the world. 🌍🌊

Conservation as a field has long drawn from the natural sciences to guide strategy and to decide which behaviors need changing, but it has been slower to fully embrace what behavioral science teaches about changing behavior reliably and effectively.

Rare's Philipe Bujold joined Gayle Burgess of TRAFFIC and Lucia Reisch of the Cambridge Judge Business School in offering a blueprint for breaking down the silos that have kept behavioral insights from enhancing critical conservation work around the world.

At its core, conservation is about behavior change. Yet few organizations have put in place the structure, standards, and accountability needed to apply behavioral science effectively.

✨ Rare's year in Review: Launching the world's first Small-Scale Fisheries Impact Bond

In Southeast Sulawesi, Rare has mobilized $8.1 million to finance three new managed access areas, benefiting nearly 30,000 fishers and channeling climate resilience funding directly to frontline communities. It's also the foundation for a planned $70 million regional expansion, bringing outcomes-based conservation finance to more coastal communities.

"When conservation is framed as something that limits people instead of involving them, it creates barriers. Conservation succeeds better when people see that conservation benefits their lives.”

Great insight from Rare's Kevin Green in this The Nonprofit Quarterly article about bridging people and conservation.

For too long, climate activists and scientists have neglected to account for how human behavior shapes conservation efforts. A new project from The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens and the International Union for Conservation of Nature aims to change that.

Congratulations to Rare's Kate Schweigart, who was named of Fin-Erth's 101 Leading Women in Climate!

From the article:

"From shaping the world’s first Small Scale Fisheries Impact Bond to designing practical insurance and risk tools that frontline coastal communities can actually use, Kate has refused to let traditional barriers stop progress."

Congratulations, Kate!

Fin-Erth Women is a curated community for women in finance, investment, policy, law, innovation and operators. It is for action orientated women who are leading the climate revolution from within.
