The Nature Conservancy Together, we can create a world where people and nature thrive. 🌍💚 https://nature.org It's the smartest investment we can make.

Air, water, food, shelter, income: nature sustains every aspect of our lives. That's why protecting and conserving nature isn't just a matter of common sense. Since our founding in 1951, The Nature Conservancy has harnessed the power of nature to help solve our planet’s most challenging problems. And while the stakes are high, so is our resolve: to create a world where everyone thrives alongside n

ature for generations to come. We do this by working hand in hand with communities around the world. By committing to a science-based, non-partisan approach that’s stood the test of time. And by bringing people together, from all walks of life, to find common ground in nature.

Why do some animals' eyes seem to glow in the dark? 👀✨

That's thanks to a reflective layer in the back of the eye called the tapetum lucidum, which in Latin means "tapestry of light" or "bright tapestry." It acts like a mirror, bouncing light back through the retina and helping animals see more clearly at night.

It might look a little mysterious, but it's actually one of nature's many brilliant adaptations for life after dark.

In September 2024, Hurricane Helene left a trail of destruction in the eastern U.S. Buried among the downed trees of North Carolina was a super rare salamander. A team of scientists set out to save them, but first they'd have to find them among the rubble.

This wasn't in the shot list 🐙

On assignment for Nature Conservancy magazine, Indigenous photographer and writer Kiliii Yuyan spent several days diving in the Great Bear Sea. What began as a routine shoot quickly turned into something unexpected – one Kiliii describes as a moment of trust and connection.

But did he get the shot!? Check out Kiliii’s photos and our latest feature on the Great Bear Sea: https://nature.ly/4tUaUJN

A combination of deforestation and climate change is pushing rainfall patterns inside the Amazon River basin to new extremes. A new report from The Nature Conservancy predicts the region’s hydrology is shifting toward longer droughts and occasionally higher floods—affecting communities and biodiversity alike.

Rock On!

Known as the “Yosemite of South America,” Patagonia’s Fundo Puchegüín is one of the most spectacular—and vulnerable—landscapes in Chile.

When the property went up for sale, a coalition led by local organization Puelo Patagonia refused to let this phenomenal landscape slip through the cracks. It mobilized at record speed, raising more than $78 million to protect most of Puchegüín's 328,000 acres from development while supporting low‑impact tourism and local communities.

An extraordinary example of what conservation partnerships can accomplish.

A bird that looks like it belongs on the coast... but lives in the middle of the continent.

The plains-wanderer is one of the world's most unusual and endangered birds. Found only in Australia's native grasslands, it depends on a fragile ecosystem that's rapidly disappearing.

🐦 This Endangered Species Day, take a moment to meet a species you've probably never heard of—but won't forget: https://nature.ly/4tyku3w
