Funding is more competitive than ever, and P*s are stretched thin, juggling multiple proposals alongside teaching, research, mentoring, and institutional service. Research development programming is one of the key ways research administrators help ease that load.

LevelUP's Principles in Research Development module builds the skills to support it.

📊 Identify and address capability gaps at the institutional and individual level
🎯 Match RDP activities to your institution's needs and priorities
🔍 Search, discover, and disseminate solicitations aligned to investigator strengths
📋 Contribute to a limited submissions selection process that works for your institution

"So, what exactly is an encumbrance?"

That question came from a PI who'd been leading studies for over 30 years, proof that even brilliant researchers aren't always fluent in ledgers.

This month's Catalyst spotlight tackles that gap: Laura W. Sheehan, Manager of Research Administration in UCLA's Department of Family Medicine, breaks down how to run financial review meetings that keep P*s engaged, compliant, and coming back.

Confidence in research law starts with understanding the regulations that shape your work: intellectual property, compliance and ethics, grants and contracts, and the public policy issues research administrators navigate every day.

The Research Law Certificate can be completed in full during the 2026 Annual Meeting, turning your time in Honolulu into a real credentialing opportunity.

There's a version of professional development that only happens face-to-face: the hallway conversation that finally solves a problem you've been stuck on, or the colleague halfway across the world who's working through the exact same thing.

Dara Little, SRAI Board of Directors President, talks about those moments in this video, and why they're reason enough to attend the Annual Meeting in person.

Now we want to hear from you: what's your Annual Meeting story? Drop it in the comments or tag us! We'll be sharing our favorites before Honolulu, October 10-14.

Fitting professional development into an already full schedule is its own challenge, and it's exactly what SRAI's LevelUP modules are built around.

Each module takes just 3–5 hours, works for both early-career and seasoned research administrators, and includes a digital badge to show your verified expertise once you're done.

What does effective leadership actually look like in practice? The summer cohort of SRAI’s Research Leadership Intensive spent two days working through exactly that: leadership theory, team building, and the harder work of navigating change within a research office.

Marchon Jackson, Special Assistant to the AVP for Research Administration for the Division of Research at the University of Maryland, and Stacy Pritt, SRAI Distinguished Faculty, Associate Vice Chancellor & Chief Research Compliance Officer at The Texas A&M University System, led the program with a clear focus on ethical, people-centered leadership.

A huge thank you to the instructors, attendees, and staff who made it all possible. We're already excited to see where participants take this next!

In case you missed it: RMAs are shaping research from inside universities. But they're doing it from funding agencies, policy organizations, and other non-research-performing organizations too.

Authors José Santos, Carolina Varela, and Simon Kerridge dig into how these RMAs define their professional identity and navigate research ecosystems in the most recent issue of the Journal of Research Administration: https://brnw.ch/21x4Iaf

E Hoʻomau — to persevere, to move forward with purpose — is our theme this year, and it's the throughline of our opening keynote.

Kamuela Enos, Director of the Office of Indigenous Knowledge and Innovation at the University of Hawaiʻi System, opens the 2026 Annual Meeting on October 12 with a look at how Indigenous knowledge systems and the university co-designed ecosystems of innovation work with regional communities.
