Stand with us to demand lawmakers stop adding to our unsustainable national debt.

Whether it's competition with China, the disruption from AI, or whatever the next crisis is, we don't have the fiscal firepower to respond. We've backed ourselves into a corner where we're more controlled by our borrowing from the past than our choices for the future.

CRFB President Maya MacGuineas doesn't mince words: it's no exaggeration to say we risk losing our superpower status because of this issue. The Concord Coalition's Bob Bixby sat down with MacGuineas at the Portman Center Fiscal Symposium on Facing the Future to discuss what's at stake and what it will take to turn things around.

The good news? We know how to fix this. The biggest thing standing in the way is polarization.

The NBA Finals start tomorrow night at 8:30 p.m. ET. San Antonio Spurs vs. New York Knicks, for the first time since 1999.

The last time these teams met on this stage, the federal government was running a surplus.

A lot has changed but the deficit hasn't. We're still keeping count.

Reconciliation only works if the same party controls both chambers of Congress and the White House. If one chamber flips in the next election, it's off the table. That means hundreds of billions in proposed defense funding could disappear overnight.

American Enterprise Institute Senior Fellow Todd Harrison calls it a highly risky maneuver. The Concord Coalition's Bob Bixby sat down with Harrison on Facing the Future to discuss why relying on a temporary, partisan process to fund national defense is a gamble we can't afford to keep making.

America's federal debt is now larger than our entire economy. That's never happened in peacetime. And without a course correction, it's projected to climb to 120% of GDP by the mid-2030s.

Right now, deficits are averaging around 6% of GDP. There is bipartisan support in both the House and Senate for a 3% deficit-to-GDP target, which would effectively cut our annual deficits in half and begin stabilizing the debt.

Is it a fix-all? No. But it's a clear, achievable benchmark, backed by serious economists and policymakers across the political spectrum, and a credible first step toward long-term fiscal sustainability.
