Some fun facts about Glen Carlyn Park.
1. It is illegal for walkers to be on the social trails at the park, yet there are multiple signs stating only bikers can't.
2. As the social trails are off limits, the park being a natural resource conservation area (NRCA), the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) says logs and debris fallen on trails should be left.
3. Violating its own policy, DPR does maintain sections of the unofficial, banned social trails. Community users also maintain the trails covertly, using their own saws and even constructing homemade bridges.

Last week, we had an opportunity to speak to the Arlington Ridge Civic Association. We presented our vision of a temporary bike park at James W. Haley Park. We explained what a bike park is, the benefits to the community, and a concept of what we hope to build. The Arlington Ridge Civic Association members showed a lot of interest and asked great questions. The Civic Association will share details with the rest of the Arlington Ridge Community. Overall, it was a positive first step to gaining community support. Thank you, Arlington Ridge Civic Association; we appreciate the opportunity.

https://publicinput.com/s8070 Often, people ask us, “What can I do to help open natural surface trails to bikes in Arlington?” Let’s be honest… Arlington’s process for changing the Public Spaces Master Plan is not a quick one, so there have not been many actionable tasks. UNTIL NOW. The county just completed the Natural Surface Trails Study to assess the state of our natural trails in Arlington. They are currently seeking input from the public to find out how people want to use the natural trails in Arlington. What can you do? Providing your input is the most meaningful way to let the County know that many of us want to open our natural trails to bicycles. When filling out the questionnaire, be specific… tell them that you want to see bikes on natural trails for youth, for people who can’t or don’t want to drive them to neighboring counties.

Over the past year, AT has been working with the Department of Parks and Recreation to identify county land for a temporary bike skills park. DPR suggested Haley Park, which is above Gunston MS and adjacent to Oakridge ES, as it's a convenient location to connect young people with nature and bikes. Local youth riders came up with the rendering (see below). They took their inspiration primarily from the Lake Fairfax and Mount Vernon Parks jump areas.

The next step is starting a dialogue with the neighborhood. If you live or know someone in the Arlington Ridge neighborhood that may be interested in helping this project, please contact us. Thanks!
