We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Donna Matthews, Museums Alaska's longest-serving Executive Director, on June 18. https://adportal.adn.com/adportal/listingView.html?id=9795

Donna led Museums Alaska from 1994 to 2004, a decade of tremendous growth, collaboration, and advocacy for Alaska's museums. As executive director, she helped lead many important advocacy efforts for the state museum, statute changes, and national agencies, expanded partnerships to co-host regional and national conferences, launched Museums Alaska's first website, and oversaw the development of the Art Acquisition Fund grant program in partnership with the Rasmuson Foundation—a program that continued for over 20 years.

As Gail Hollinger wrote in "A Short History of Museums Alaska":
"It was snowing very hard the day Donna Matthews was to come in for an interview but like a real Alaskan, snow didn't slow her down and she arrived for her appointment exactly on time. We knew immediately that she was the perfect person for the job... Luckily for us, Donna believed in the work Museums Alaska was engaged in and wanted to be part of it."

That commitment shaped our organization during her tenure and beyond. Donna believed deeply in the power of museums to serve their communities, and her leadership helped build the strong statewide network we know today.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Donna's family, friends, and the many museum professionals whose lives she touched. Thank you, Donna, for your vision, your dedication, and the lasting legacy you have left for Alaska's museums.

The Museums Alaska board is the driving force behind our statewide professional organization. Nine volunteers, representing a variety of regions and interests across the state, set the vision and policies that propel our mission forward.

Board members serve a three-year term, with the option of re-nominating themselves for an additional three-year term. Every year, we have three board positions open for nominations. More information about board service is below.

Currently, Museums Alaska is in a transition period as we seek to create new services for our members and the field, as well as new revenue streams to sustain our organization. If you think that would be an exciting challenge, please consider nominating yourself!

Our keynote this year is Polly McKenna-Cress, a leader in the museum field with more than 35+ years of experience in exhibition design, interpretation, and both formal and informal education. Her work is grounded in civic-minded, socially responsible creative practices and emphasizes meaningful community engagement at local and international levels.

She has managed and collaborated on more than 60 exhibitions worldwide and spent over 25 years as an Associate Professor, where she provided academic leadership and mentored students across multiple disciplines. An accomplished author, lecturer, and workshop facilitator, McKenna-Cress is widely recognized for her contributions to the field.

We will also have many of our own Alaska colleagues present sessions and workshops on a variety of topics from curation, programming, collections management, and more! Learn more: https://museumsalaska.org/conferences/2026-conference/2026-conference-schedule/

Thank you to Marathon Petroleum Corporation for being one of the wonderful sponsors of our Museum Leadership Cohort! Between their support and the support of Ideum, we were able to provide scholarships to several of our museum directors and deputy directors. We are so lucky to have been able to connect with many of our newest museum leadership colleagues over several months and discuss a wide variety of issues together.

And a huge thank you also goes out to our Alaska museum and cultural center colleagues for leading discussions and participating in networking calls.

We are beyond lucky to have such a supportive community. Thank you all!

Museums Alaska helps preserve the history, culture and stories that define communities across the state. Find out how a Marathon Petroleum grant is helping support that mission. ⬇️
