Flood preparedness is in full swing in Juneau after three years of significant glacial lake outburst events along the Mendenhall River.

Earlier this month, our volunteers helped keep Juneau residents informed during a community meeting regarding the floods.

Here are some flood safety tips to keep in mind:

✅ Know your risk
If you live near the Mendenhall River or other low-lying areas, stay alert. These spots are most vulnerable when glacial lakes release water.
✅ Sign up for alerts
Follow City & Borough of Juneau updates and NWS Juneau for real-time warnings and river level changes.
✅ Make a plan
Have an evacuation route ready and a plan for where you’ll go if waters rise quickly. Share it with your household so everyone knows what to do.
✅ Prepare an emergency kit
Include essentials like water, food, medications, flashlights, batteries, and important documents in a waterproof container.

A few weeks ago, our community came together for an incredible Sound the Alarm event, and the impact was truly inspiring.

Thanks to the dedication and hard work of our amazing volunteers, we were able to install 130 smoke alarms and help 156 individuals take important steps toward making their homes safer from home fires. Your time, energy, and commitment made all the difference!

We also want to give a special thank you to The Anchorage Fire Department for partnering with us and supporting this life-saving effort. Your collaboration and expertise helped ensure that more families are protected.

Together, we’re building a stronger, safer community, one home at a time.

“Sometimes you just need one person who can run interference behind the scenes and get things done. There's always a way," said David Hinshaw, Red Cross of Alaska's board chair for the past two years.

After 12 years of dedicated leadership, our Board Chair, David Hinshaw is stepping down, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, service, and commitment to communities across Alaska.

We are deeply grateful for his steady guidance, passion for the Red Cross mission, and the countless ways he helped strengthen our ability to serve those facing emergencies every day. From supporting our Sound The Alarm campaign, to championing volunteers and community partnerships, his impact will be felt for years to come.

Please join us in celebrating his remarkable service and thanking him for the difference he has made across our region. ❤️

🔥 Wildfire season is upon us here in Alaska.
The Alaska Division of Forestry reported 28 new fires just this past week. If your home is in a wildfire-prone area, now is a good time to ask the question: Is your family prepared?

Last week, Red Cross volunteers in the Fairbanks area visited homes and conducted wildfire safety visits. During these visits, volunteers spend about 30 minutes walking around your home to assess defensible spaces, wildfire preparedness plans, evacuation routes, and more.

Wildfires affect everyone. They can spread fast and harm people and animals in their path. Wildfires are getting bigger and more dangerous. More people are living in areas at risk for wildfires, but we can take action.

Did you know? Your favorite songs can help save a life.
When performing CPR, aim for 100–120 beats per minute, that’s the same rhythm as songs like:

Stayin’ Alive – Bee Gees
Uptown Funk – Bruno Mars
Can’t Stop the Feeling! – Justin Timberlake

Which song would you choose? Keeping the beat helps deliver effective chest compressions. To learn more, take a Red Cross CPR and First Aid course by visiting redcross.org/takeaclass.

Knowing CPR is powerful, but knowing where to find an AED and how to use it can save a life in critical moments.

During CPR and AED Awareness week, take time this week to:
🔍 Locate the nearest AED at your workplace or in your community
📍 Make sure others know where it is
⚡ Learn how to use it with confidence

In an emergency, every second counts, and being prepared can make all the difference. The simple steps are easier than you think (check out the image in this post!).
