Please join us in welcoming Julia Baines as the new Regional Disaster Officer for the American Red Cross of Alaska.

Raised in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, Julia brings extensive emergency management experience and a deep commitment to helping communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. Julia previously served as the Mass Care Coordinator in the State of Alaska Emergency Operations Center and has supported responses ranging from local emergencies to major disasters, including Ex-Typhoon Halong. She also deployed to Florida to assist communities impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton.

Our amazing Service to the Armed Forces volunteers came together yesterday for a fun afternoon of decorating Halloween-themed candy collection boxes for an upcoming Trick-or-Treat event at the JBER Hospital! 🎃🍬

These creative volunteers put their artistic talents to work to help bring a little extra joy to military families and children this Halloween season. Thank you to everyone who helped make these festive boxes spook-tacular, and if you're at JBER Hospital this month, consider donating candy to support this good cause.

All jokes aside, Fire Prevention Week is a great time to make sure your family has a plan in case of a home fire.

🏃 Practice your escape plan: Two minutes is the amount of time that fire experts say you may have to safely escape a home fire before it’s too late.
🏡 Have a meeting place: Designate a safe meeting place away from your home to ensure everyone is accounted for.
🧯 Test your smoke alarms: Check your smoke alarms to ensure they are working and not expired. Replace them every ten years.

Last week our volunteers attended the Alaska State Firefighters' Conference in Kenai. We are always honored to support our first responders and inform them of our mission. We rely on our local fire departments to connect us with those in need after a home fire to ensure families get the help they need.

“I chose the Red Cross of Alaska because my grandma was active in the Red Cross when she was a military spouse. So it just felt like a good fit, and I wanted to carry on that legacy,” said Carly Stuber. Earlier this summer, Carly was selected as the recipient of the Amanda L. Blanchard Award of Volunteer Excellence, also known as our Volunteer of the Year.

Carly serves as our region's Client Care supervisor and responds as a member of our disaster action team and government operations liaison. As a volunteer for less than a year, Carly has already led big initiatives with our region during the response to Typhoon Halong.

Earlier this week, Disaster Program Manager Spike and DAT Volunteer Richard attended a disaster resiliency workshop in Nome. Some areas of Alaska can become inaccessible during disasters, so having a preparedness plan before an emergency is especially important. We are grateful to the agencies that invite our team to help communities become better prepared.
