Pika or arctic ground squirrel?!

Even though it's technically spring, it hit -30° this morning in Denali National Park and Preserve, so naturally, we’re debating winter survival strategies. Pikas spend the summer literally making hay—cutting, drying, and storing plants for an active, food-filled winter. Arctic ground squirrels choose something a bit more chill, dropping their body temperatures as low as 27° as they hibernate in snug burrows deep under the snow.

Which strategy would you choose?

P.S. Want a chance to encounter these incredible creatures in real life? There’s still space in our Denali Alpine Wildlife Field Course this summer. Visit www.akgeo.org/field-courses to learn more.

📦🏔️ It’s beginning to look a lot like… pre-season in the Alaska Geographic warehouse!

You’ve heard of Denali, but have you met Mount AK Geo? It’s majestic. It’s cardboard. It’s not afraid of taking up (storage) space!

New 2026 goodies are arriving daily! From plush and magnets to fresh apparel, our team is busy counting inventory, playing real-life Tetris, and assuring Regional Operations Manager Liz Munns that yes - we have room for many more pallets!

The good news? These towering stacks of inventory will soon make their way into the hands (and backpacks) of visitors across Alaska’s parks and refuges.

Until then, we’ll be over here building character… and box forts.

🛍️ Want a sneak peek at what’s coming this season? Check out our web store for the latest and greatest Alaska Geographic finds - your future favorite souvenir is probably in one of these boxes right now!

Happy Birthday to America’s National Wildlife Refuges! Out of more than 570 sites, Alaska is home to 16 of them!

Some, like Alaska Maritime, Kenai, and Tetlin, are easy to visit from the road system.

Others, such as Kodiak, Yukon Delta, and Koyukuk, present more of a challenge, but it’s always worth it to experience these wonderful wild places.

Alaska Geographic is proud to support and partner with Alaska’s National Wildlife Refuges!

🌟 Calling all Northwest Arctic teenagers! 🌟

Join us for Arctic Travelers in the Great Kobuk Sand Dunes of Kobuk Valley National Park. In partnership with Western Arctic National Parklands, this trip is designed for students from Alaska’s Northwest Arctic, Far North, and Nome Boroughs.

Backpack through rolling sand dunes, tundra, and boreal forest, camp under the Arctic sky, spot wildlife, and explore the unique geology and ecology of this remote landscape. Along the way, take part in a hands-on conservation project with the National Park Service and learn about the deep cultural connections Indigenous communities have with these lands.

Don’t miss this chance to experience one of Alaska’s most awe-inspiring, least-visited places with other local teens. 🌲✨ Apply now!

With longer daylight hours, it’s starting to feel like spring in Alaska. The creeks are beginning to flow, and before we know it we’ll be out along Chester Creek listening to the sound of the water rushing by while students dive into hands-on science.

Through our Watershed Education Program with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, students explore their local watershed, test water quality, and learn how healthy watersheds support fish, wildlife, and our community.

We’re still looking for volunteers for our April stream visits and May field trips to Westchester Lagoon. If you enjoy being outside, working with students, and supporting science education, we’d love to have you join us.

Only 7 days left to submit your Teen Expedition application! ⏳

What does an expedition sound like? The click of tent poles collapsing in the morning, a paddle dipping through the water, birdsong echoing across camp, and wind moving across the open landscape. Every now and then—when the teen chatter and laughter pauses—you can really hear it.

Our summer expeditions give Alaska teens the chance to disconnect from screens, unplug from the everyday noise, and connect with each other and the public lands around them in incredible places like Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, Steese National Conservation Area, Denali National Park and Preserve, and Kobuk Valley National Park.

Applications are due March 15. Applications submitted after the deadline will be automatically waitlisted and considered as space becomes available. New Student applications require a nomination to be considered.

Don’t miss your chance to get outside with us this summer—apply today! 🏕️🥾🌬️

Why go to a museum to look at dinosaur fossils when you could find them in Denali National Park and Preserve instead?!

This summer, June 12-14, you can join paleontologist Patrick Druckenmiller, Director of the University of Alaska Museum of the North, for an inside look at his research in Denali. On this field course, you’ll learn how to recognize dinosaur tracks and other fossils and test this knowledge by visiting potential new sites. You’ll also learn some of the paleontological tools-of-the-trade and contribute to real research on Alaskan dinosaurs.
