🥳 It's our birthday, and we can't believe how quickly our first year has flown!

There are too many year 1 memories to list, but to highlight just a few:

Last month, Michigan air regulators inspected the Arbor Hills Landfill in Washtenaw County. In addition to citing the landfill for failing to test equipment as required, inspectors also noted:

-Multiple areas where contaminated leachate seeped through the landfill surface and drained into the stormwater collection system
-A whopping 75 methane exceedances
-Noticeable landfill gas odors
-Eroded landfill cover
-Clogged landfill gas collection systems

Despite these findings, a troubled history of environmental operations, and major pushback from the surrounding community, GFL Environmental is still seeking permission to build a brand-new landfill in Washtenaw County. County officials shouldn't let chronic landfill mismanagement go unchecked.

Depackaging machines claim to separate food waste from packaging, sending each to the appropriate waste streams. But when left unregulated, they can actually send more plastic packaging to landfills and contaminate our soil with microplastics and forever chemicals. State regulators must enact practical guardrails to make sure that materials are actually recycled properly — not shredded into a contaminated slurry.

If you've ever poured a gallon of milk down the drain or emptied a container of yogurt because of a "sell by" label, you're not alone. It turns out that confusing and misleading date labels are a huge driver of wasted food. In addition to wasting hard-earned grocery money, that food largely ends up in landfills, where it quickly degrades into methane. Making common-sense changes to food labels is practical, easy to implement, and will prevent consumers from tossing perfectly good food too early. Kudos to states like California and New York for leading the way!

Many of us think of landfills as gross or unsightly — but for the millions of people with a landfill in their community, they also come with very real health and safety risks. Folks living near landfills face increased exposure to pollutants associated with asthma, heart disease, cancer, and more.

This is shameful, but not inevitable. By centering the voices and experiences of those most impacted, we can build a waste system that actually works for everyone.

Methane from landfills is a major drive of global warming and a carrier of toxic pollutants links to cancer, organ damage, and respiratory illnesses. But because it's invisible to the naked eye, we rely on technology to tell us where it's coming from and how much. Tools like satellites, drones, and continuous monitoring systems give us real-time insights into methane emissions from landfills and help operators on the ground take quick, targeted action to control them.
