K-12 schools are prime opportunities to keep wasted food out of landfills, slash climate pollution, and get food to people who need it. In Michigan, elementary schoolers are leading the way! Thanks to Bridge Michigan for this story on how Michigan kids are taking food waste into their own hands, and why lawmakers should invest in similar programs across the state and beyond. Nearby residents already experience high levels of emergency room visits for asthma and COPD-related emergencies. Benzene, PFAS, and black carbon have found in the air.

So why are neighbors still begging for transparent, publicly available information about what's coming out of the landfill?

Congratulations to our friends at the Zero Food Waste Coalition for their leadership in ensuring that the federal farm bill includes provisions to make composting easier and more affordable for our nation's farmers — once again proving that composting's many environmental and economic benefits have strong bipartisan appeal!

The bill, which sets the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s budget, now goes to the Senate. New language would ensure farmers can be reimbursed for using compost as a soil amendment, unlocking more business for composters.

Landfills aren't in the middle of nowhere. They're in residential communities, lurking near schools and childcare centers, and in the shadow of neighborhood parks.

For 21 million people, trash doesn't get thrown "away." Are you one of the millions of people with a landfill as a neighbor? Find out at wasteimpacttracker.org.
