The Caregiver Cliff

"Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain," and "The worker deserves his wages." - 1 Timothy 5:18 (NIV)

Thanks to modern healthcare and better lifestyles the average human lifespan has steadily increased over time. However, if we live long enough, there usually comes a time in our lives when we are no longer able to care for ourselves.

Annette Gulick said it this way "When you're young you have time and energy but no money. When you get older you have money and energy but no time. And later when you finally have time and money, you no longer have energy."

If you have loved ones near or at this stage of life you bear the responsibility for caring for them. Are you prepared for this duty? Are you prepared to love your parents or other elders in your life in this way? Are you prepared to take care of people who once took care of you?

This is a reality that most of us will eventually face. Not only do we need to have the heart to take care of our loved ones in their later years, but we also must be prepared to financially assist them if necessary. If you truly love your closest relatives then you must build their long-term care into your financial plan. This requires knowledge and it may require some serious and potentially painful conversations. However, these efforts are always worth it. What better way to honor those who paved the road for you than by ensuring that their last years on earth are happy and drama-free. What better way to reward them for their many years of hard work and dedication than to give them good living conditions and top-notch medical care.

Heavenly Father, help me to align my heart so that I am prepared to care for my older loved ones if necessary. Please help me to plan for this possibility by allocating a portion of my savings for the long-term care of loved ones who are so dear to me. Help me to talk with them and have transparent conversations so that I can make their later years as joyful and peaceful as possible. May I be an instrument in seeing that they are rewarded for the labor of their earlier years. Amen.

Hearing the Heart

"For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ."

During the last days of 2014, the mail at my home and on my electronic devices represented a multitude of fund-raising appeals. Each made an appeal to support this or that cause, for tax purposes before the end of the year. One of them, unlike so many, struck home and made an impact I had not felt in a long time.

The author of the letter told of a friend of his who had developed a friendship with a young student who was overwhelmed with problems and desperately needed to talk to someone he trusted. The friend listened to the young man's grief and concerns. And it seemed that in the "talking about them" to someone he trusted, the young man was helped. The author's friend said, "It seemed that most of all, the young man needed someone to "hear his heart."

The letter's author went on to say. "Being heard is often our greatest need. It is the greatest need of the disadvantaged community. It is the greatest need of the distressed individual. We need someone to listen and care. There is "healing in the telling." And then, the author finished his appeal letter with this thought.

"Last month, I flew late one night to New York City. The large plane left Dallas and climbed to an altitude of 35,000 feet, flew eighteen hundred miles, and landed safely. But the pilot explained to the tired passengers that there would be a short delay while the plane was towed to the gate.

Here was a large plane that easily flown a great distance yet needed a little tow truck to negotiate the last delicate turn into the gate. It is a mirror of the human condition. We all need each other. Some days we need a little "tow" to complete our "arrival."

How true. In our lives lived and in our life-time there will be many who will need our assistance. They may need a little "tow" - someone to "hear their heart." When the time comes in 2015, may we "be there" for them.

However - we have an eternal tow that is ever ready and available to us in Jesus Christ.

A wonderful testimony shared by Marilyn Bradford of Concord Church in Dallas, TX! Something we all should think about!

Relationship Rescuer

Proverbs 3:27-28

Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act. Do not say to your neighbor, "Come back tomorrow and I'll give it to you"
- when you already have it with you.

Luke 6:38

Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

What does it mean to show favor toward someone? We show favor when we are willing to bestow kindness, approval, advantage, privilege and help to someone based on an inclination in our hearts. We may not have known them very long, or much about them at all. I have been on the receiving end of favor for much of my life. There have been people in my life who have simply felt inclined to help me move ahead. You see, I did not achieve the college education levels that I desired to enhance my career life. BUT GOD saw fit to bless me through the good favor of others. Good parents, a good husband, good children, good friends, good teachers, good managers, and good jobs with great privileges to travel and make a good living.

With so much good in my life, how could I withhold
good gifts from others when it is in my power to give!

I must share this testimony with you today about a couple that I had the privilege to serve in a ministry here at Concord. This wonderful couple felt so inclined to bless me in obedient faith to God that they returned to my class and gave me a thank you card. I humbly accepted the card with hugs and warm feelings of appreciation. As I sat in the pews waiting for Sunday service to start, I opened my card with a smile, expecting to find encouraging words from my new friends. But lo and behold money started falling out - twenties and hundred dollar bills. My husband and I were astonished at this unexpected, good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over blessing of favor, kindness and CASH! My Lord!

Why? Was it to bless me with money because I was so good? No my dear sweet Christian family, it wasn't for the money and I am not that good! It was for the relationship. Sometimes our relationships need rescuing with the gift of new friends, new trust, new beginnings, encouragement, and new hope. God is Good! And He desires to do great things through us and for us. Praise His Holy Name.

Thank you Lord for restoring our faith with Your goodness. Give us the heart to be a Relationship Rescuer like Jesus, willing to help each other by giving good and timely gifts to those in need. Amen.

Can Financial Advice Be A Sure Thing

"Store your treasures in Heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal."

There is plenty to worry about in 2015. For instance, looking back on 2014, the stock market experienced a nightmare roller coaster ride that on several occasions saw one of the best days of the year, followed by one of the worst.

Nadeem Walayat, editor of The Market Oracle, cautions against too much reliance on mainstream media's seeming paranoia about interest rates raised and cut by the Federal Government. He observes that since the current bull market began in 2009, stocks have actually done quite nicely following rate hikes. He adds, "Its rate cuts that stock bulls need to worry about, for they signal weakness ahead."

Walayatt sees an amazing parallel in the movie Spartacus, where the slaves are lined up at the end - just like many market observers line up at the depths of a market corrections - to proclaim that they, too, are all Spartacus! He adds, "However we all know what happens at the end of the movie, as they all end are getting crucified."

But we should not despair. Scripture has much to say about investments of eternal worth. In fact, with the exception of love, Jesus had more to say about money than any other topic. Why is that? A common misconception about money is that it's "the root of all evil." Actually, the correct quote is "The love of money is the root of all evil."

Money itself is not bad. Money is necessary to support our families, our ministries and, pay taxes. Money is a good thing when handled properly and in perspective. However, money can be a bad thing when the drive to accumulate it gets out of control. That's where real problems begin. Jesus gives us wise counsel: "Store your treasures in Heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal." (Matthew 6:20)

But Jesus does not stop there. He goes on to promise that those who put their trust in God will reap dividends. "Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need." (Matthew 6:33)

I do not believe that any serious investor would pass on deal like that. Television commercials barrage us with investment strategies, sure-fire remedies for indebtedness and even the advantages of collecting gold or silver for one's portfolio.

But unlike some of these worldly claims, the offer of Christ is real. It is exclusive. And it is backed by the inexhaustible riches of our Heavenly Father. You can take that to the bank.

Broken Bonds: Let Go of Fear

The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. Luke 8:14

The disciples asked Jesus the meaning of the parable of the sower. This is one that we should all remember and keep close to our hearts, for in doing so, we mature in our faith and reunite with God.

11 "This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. 12 Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.13 Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. 14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature."

This parable is a caution to us to not be caught up in the worries of life, do not seek earthly riches, and beware of earthly pleasures. Do not break your bond with God and seek to find the "treasures" of this earth. If we give these worries and earthly desires to the Lord, we demonstrate our faith in Him, mature in our faith and build a stronger bond with God. Are you holding on to something from your past? Are you seeking riches? Are you seeking love? Are you afraid to relinquish your search and let God take control? Reunite yourself with God and experience the richness of His love and mercy.

Father, we ask for a closer connection to you. We don't want to be the seed that fell among the thorns. We don't want life's worries to overshadow Your Blessings. Help us to stay focused on You and Your love and graciousness. Help us in our maturity so that we can grow in understanding Your will. In the name of you son, Jesus, Amen.

Perpetual Peace

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27 (NIV)

Have you ever found yourself dreaming of an escape from the daily rat race? Have you had a harrowing experience and wished for a vacation to your favorite get-a-way spot? Did you find that after shopping, packing, delayed flights, cabs and lost luggage, just getting away for peace was all that mattered?

To the Jewish people, "shalom" or peace is a precious word. Shalom means wholeness, completeness, health, security, and even prosperity in the best sense. When you are enjoying God's peace, there is joy and contentment. But God's peace is not like the peace that the world offers.

The world bases its peace on resources, while God's peace depends on relationships. To be right with God means to enjoy the peace of God. The world depends on personal ability, but the Christian depends on spiritual adequacy in Christ. In the world, peace is something you hope for or work for; but to the Christian, peace is God's wonderful gift, received by faith. Unsaved people enjoy peace when there is an absence of trouble; Christians enjoy peace in spite of trials because of the presence of power, the Holy Spirit.

People in the world walk by sight and depend on the externals, but Christians walk by faith and depend on the eternals. The Spirit of God teaches us the Word and guides us into the truth. The Spirit reminds us that we can depend on God's word in difficult times of life. The Spirit uses the Word to give us His peace.

Sometimes, we think that our favorite get-a-way spot will be the solace that we need. Sadly enough, when we seek peace from a worldly source, it is never satisfying. Regardless of how far we may travel to obtain peace, it comes from God, our Father. It is not obtained by our resources, but of our relationship with God.

Father, help us to understand that peace comes only from abiding in your presence. Still our spirits and hearts Lord, so that we submit to your peace. Help us to remember that peace comes only from you. Lord, give us the limited vision to stay focused on you, which gives us the purest form of peace. Thank you now, for the peace you will pour into our lives.

Giving to Others...It's a Good Thing & It's a God Thing!

Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 1 Timothy 6:18 (NIV)

YOU OWN NOTHING. Your house, your job, your health - all of it could be gone in an instant. Everything you have is on loan. Once you can accept that everything is God loaned and God owned, then you become more able to share with others. Sharing with others is the ultimate act of faith. It says to God - just as you have given to me before- I trust you to give me more.

For some of us it's not trust that stops us but judgments. Why is it that the gifts God freely gives to us we often feel others must earn before we share it with them? It is not our role to judge ; it is our role to give and to do so, whenever possible.

Some of us are trapped by our possessions. We get caught up in the " what if" game. What if I give this away and then I need it later? For some of us the door to our heart is blocked by our bank statement. We are unwilling to give to God and we are unwilling to give to others. For many of us the more we get- the more we think we need. Free yourself of the burden of acquisition. How much we share and what we share, says a lot about how much we care.

An abundant life is not about property and wealth, it's about people. Do you want to experience joy every day? Do you want to learn the path to peace? It's simple. Use your finances to enhance the lives of the less fortunate. No strings attached, No what ifs, No requirements , No regrets..... just be a blessing. Both you and God will rejoice in your new found freedom.

Your daily motto should be ---the blessings that flow to me will become the blessings that flow through me.

God thank you so much for allowing us to share your love with each other. Remind us that when You bless us You expect us to bless someone else that can't pay us back. Help us to understand that we have to give because You gave it to us. Lord thank you so much that you are teaching us how to be good stewards through this financial fast. We love You!

Guard Against Greed - Greed Will Block Prosperity

"Wealth gained by dishonesty will be diminished, but he who gathers by labor will increase." Proverbs 13:11

When we turn on the TV we often hear the words scammers, hackers, predatory lenders, identity theft, and illegal dealings while watching a show or during advertisement. These terms are used to describe some type of dishonest practice or means of acquiring wealth. Acquiring illegal wealth is called GREED.

Greed or being greedy seems to frame the world we live in. It seems to be the norm of how some people rise to the top or acquire "stuff" in our culture. However, according to research, greed stems from the basic fear of lacking or deprivation. This assumption is totally the opposite of what Jesus tells us "God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power"- 2 Timothy 1:7. We have power to overcome the need or desire to selfishly want more money, power, food, clothes, shoes, etc. based on our fears.

Greed not only keeps us up at night worrying about how to make more money or to acquire more things, but greed tends to make us envious of others who have what we desire. This is to covet what our brother has and Jesus frowns on this as he warns against it, "Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses" - Luke 12:15. This scripture should set us free from greed, because Jesus does not care about how much we possess. How many storages or garages we have full of material possessions. Jesus counts prosperity by the life we live not by our dollars.

Father, I bow before you thanking you for the power to overcome my desires to want more... Lord forgive me for taking advantage of others for my own selfish gains, because I know wealth gained dishonestly will fade away. Help me to live knowing that the amount of cars I own, what is in my bank account does not get me closer to you. You are more concerned with how many people that I have helped along the way with my wealth. Father take away this bitter cup of GREED from my life. In Jesus name, Amen.

Cosigning: A Faithless Act

"The righteousness of the blameless makes their paths straight, but the wicked are brought down by their own wickedness" Proverbs 11:5 (NIV)

As a precocious child, I was often rebuked about my actions. While doling out consequences, my mother would tell me, "you have made your bed, and now lie in it!" As much as I hated hearing that, I knew that I would have to deal with the daunting ramifications of my choices. Much like my mother's rebuke, Proverbs 11:5 is a promise foreshadowed for both the righteous and the wicked. The righteous will have a clear understanding of the steps they must take. However, the wicked will deal with consequences that happen as a result of their choices.

Because the Christian life is predicated on faith, it is important for us to act in faith at all times. Consigning is a faithless act! At the root of cosigning is a lack of faith and the desire to please people over God. When we cosign, we put our belief and energy into a person who, in turn, is putting their hope into a thing. If God promises to 'meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus,' in Philippians 4:19, would we need a middle man? There is never anything that we need that God doesn't want to provide. The problem lies in our ability to have faith that God will provide exactly what we need at the time that He deems necessary.

Cosigning robs us of the opportunity to trust and depend on God's ability to provide. It diminishes an opportunity to deepen a relationship of dependence on Him. Dangerously, it creates a God-complex for the cosigner: giving a false sense of control to a person who cannot see beyond their limited, linear vantage point. Co-signing is like Bungee cord jumping with an inexperienced instructor and a rope that does not have elasticity. We set ourselves up for the worst outcome.

Lord, today I am asking for your forgiveness. I have put my wants ahead of my relationship with you. Lord, I ask that you help me be content within my circumstances. Lord, help me to praise you at all times. Thank you for making my choices plain through the word of God. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Credit is Dangerous

"One who has no sense shakes hands in pledge and puts up security for a neighbor." Proverbs 17:18 (NIV)

In this particular scripture, Solomon warns of becoming a debtor on behalf of a friend by promising through our word (e.g., signature) to guarantee our friend's debt or by putting up security (e.g., our home, car title, etc.,) for a friend. Surprisingly, while we are well aware of the pitfalls of placing ourselves in debt for unnecessary desires, we are quick to place all we have in jeopardy in the name of true friendship. If man's word cannot stand on its own to secure his needs, then we should question the nature of his business dealings. In the name of friendship, we may have jeopardized our own families. Moreover, Solomon turns the blame not on the "friend in need" back upon us and says we have no sense if we stand in the stead of our friend. If a man is quick to guarantee his possessions and give his word in debt for another, at the risk of his own family's needs, then he should not be trusted with anyone else's affairs.

God does not call us to be foolish (senseless!) in our dealings with one another. We should question each other and investigate why a friend is in need of our guarantee or surety. True friendship does not bumble forward blindly making promises that jeopardize us and those who depend on us. Instead, it calls us to be accountable to each other. If we are to shake hands in pledge or become surety for our friends, make sure it is approved by God first. He sees the entire picture and will give us a plan of action that benefits all involved.

Dear God, give me wisdom to be practical in my business with friends. Teach me to question with love and seek Your guidance whenever I am called upon to give my word or possessions in the place of another. In Jesus name, Amen.
