Congratulations to OTNA Member/Partner Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail (Mount Vernon Trail) and the National Park Service (National Park Service) for today’s induction of the Mount Vernon Trail into the Rails to Trails Conservancy’s (Rails to Trails Conservancy) Hall of Fame.

Special kudos to Vice Mayor Sarah Bagley (Sarah Bagley) who arrived at the ceremony on her bicycle via the Mount Vernon Trail and shared in the celebration of this amazing community asset.

Thank you to Rails to Trails Conservancy for a wonderful event and for shining a light on the Mount Vernon Trail, and the incredible value that trails bring to the communities around them.

The results of the community vote are in: artist Tammy Barnes (Tammy Barnes) has been selected to help design banners for the Old Town North Arts & Cultural District. We received over 800 votes, and with three very talented candidates, the race was extremely close. Thank you for your input!

The Old Town North Alliance is excited to start working with Tammy on developing designs for the banners that will identify Old Town North as the City’s designated Arts & Cultural District. Information on sponsorship opportunities will be coming soon!

Thank you to everyone who came out to Chalk-A-Block on Saturday! A special thank you to Mayor Alyia Gaskins (Alyia Gaskins) and Suzanne Bethel (The Art League) for serving on our judges’ panel along with OTNA President Ryan Whitaker.

Artist Spotlight: Sue Walia

Sue is an Old Town North resident and we are delighted to have her return to Chalk-A-Block this year!

Sue describes her artistic style as follows: “I am pretty much an Impressionist. Lately a bit more of an ‘abstract impressionist.’ I love a lot of color and I learned to become more ‘free’ with my creative process. It is really fun.”

Sue was the chalk artist for Del Ray’s Dog Fest last spring and is currently preparing work for an upcoming show called “The Painted Flower Shop.” You can also see Sue as one of the featured artists at Centreville Day later this fall.

Artist Spotlight: Shabnam Hadid

Shabnam describes her artistic style as follows: “I am an abstract expressionist artist using mixed media in my work. Of late my work has become more expressive and intuitive where healing through creative arts takes a central role. I also do custom wall murals, window painting for commercial projects, and art markets.

Shabnam has exhibited her works in New York, Dubai, Turkey, the UK, and Pakistan. She is a certified HiCAT practitioner and offers art wellness workshops using various holistic creative arts modalities.

Artist Spotlight: Patrick, Nandini, and Dhilan Kirwin

For the Kirwins, Chalk-A-Block is a family affair!

Patrick Kirwin is a master muralist who you may know from his “Dogs of Del Ray” and “Good Morning, Starshine” murals in Alexandria. Patrick describes his artistic style as follows: “I am a decorative artist, which means I do a lot of variety of imagery from abstraction to realism. My specialities are mural painting and trompe l’oil illusionism, which is a painting that fools you into thinking the painting is the actual thing depicted, such as a painted door which appears to be a real door.”

Patrick will be joined at Chalk-A-Block by his daughter Nandini and his son Dhilan. Patrick and Nandini are Chalk-A-Block veterans and this will be Dhilan’s first appearance. Both children are multiple National PTA Reflections Art Award winners.

Nandini is an artist who is also studying photography at Washington Liberty High School. Nandini likes to draw characters that she makes up and drawings of nature.

Dhilan is an artist who loves animals and nature, which make up most of his artwork.

Artist Spotlight: Anita Angjeli

Artistic style: Expressive, colorful broad strokes, mixed media paintings and collages. I like chalk ground murals for large visual impact.

Anila is an artist and an architect at Aline Architecture (ALine Architecture).

This is Anila’s second appearance at Chalk-A-Block and she has drawn at several other Old Town North Alliance chalk/art events over the years. Anila was selected as one of the artists in Mayor Gaskins’s Art in Every Space Initiative. You can see her “Second Bloom” collection on display in multiple locations throughout Alexandria through September 30th: Crilley Executive Warehouse Offices (218 N. Lee St. 3rd Floor) and CoWo Crèche (2034 Eisenhower Ave. Ste. 200). “Second Bloom” features handmade works created from upcycled materials including Washington Post plastic sleeves, heat pressed and painted with colors and markers.
