History is hidden all around us—sometimes literally beneath our feet!

Thank you to “Matt About Town” () and for highlighting the fascinating story of the Alexandria Canal, which ran straight through the middle of Old Town North. From its opening in 1843 to its modern-day reconstruction at Tide Lock Park, Canal Lock #1 represents a vital chapter of the neighborhood’s history.

Visit Tide Lock Park (1 Canal Center Plaza) to see the restored lock in person and make sure to stop by Montgomery Park (901 N Royal St.) for an up-close look at canal stones uncovered by Carr Properties during their redevelopment of 425 Montgomery Street.

Check the link in our bio for Matt’s full story! 🔗

Make plans to visit the eighth installment in the Site See series, now on display in Waterfront Park.

“Now or Never,” by artist Alicia Eggert, features two monumental structures (similar to billboards) that are positioned face to face: one says NOW and the other says NEVER. In remarks delivered at the opening celebration, Eggert expressed the hope that visitors would “think about where we are in this present moment and what you can do today to make tomorrow what you want to see happen.”

Follow for details on a special sunrise celebration on the summer solstice when the sun will rise directly between the two signs.

“Now or Never” will be on display through November 2026 and will be featured in the 2026 OTNA Art and Culture Walk brochure (available later this spring).
