More than a cane. More than a day.

Every October 15, White Cane Safety Day celebrates the independence and freedom the white cane represents. But an accessible workplace is about more than getting through the door. It's about having the opportunity to contribute once you're inside.

In her latest blog, NSITE, Sr. Specialist, Workforce Initiatives, Rikki Howie challenges employers to look beyond the cane and see the skills and potential of the person holding it.

Is your workplace ready? NSITE can help through consultation, education, and practical guidance.

Celebrating Value and Talent This NDEAM

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), and this year's theme, "Celebrating Value and Talent," reminds us that talent is everywhere, and opportunity should be too.

At NSITE, we celebrate the skills, experience, and perspectives that people with disabilities bring to the workplace every day.

We also know talent grows when the right opportunities are within reach. Through accessible professional training and career development programs, NSITE helps individuals build the skills that prepare them for what's next. And through NSITE Connect, our job board, qualified candidates meet employers who are looking for great talent.

This month, we honor the value people with disabilities already bring to the workforce, while continuing to build pathways to learn, grow, connect, and advance.

Celebrating talent matters. Making sure that talent gets seen matters even more.

Congratulations, NSITE Procurement Foundations Cohort 2!

Over several weeks, this group built hands-on skills across the procurement lifecycle, from supplier selection and ethical engagement to negotiation prep, due diligence, requisitions, and evaluating purchasing decisions.

They learned that great procurement professionals do far more than process orders. They ask the right questions, look closely at the details, build strong supplier relationships, and understand how every purchase affects the organization.

"Great procurement isn't just about what you buy. It's about the questions you ask, the relationships you build, and the decisions you make before you buy it."

Employers: These graduates are ready to contribute practical skills, fresh perspective, and real talent to your team. We'd love to connect you.

Future students: Want to be in next year's graduation photo? Procurement Foundations returns in 2027.

Congratulations, Cohort 2!

Where Technology Training Meets Accessibility Expertise

Meet Francesco, an Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) in Pittsburgh, PA, who helps people who are blind, have low vision, or are deafblind build independence through technology. Francesco is also a skilled accessibility tester, trained in WCAG, Section 508, and DHS Trusted Tester standards. He is proficient in JAWS, NVDA, ZoomText, and Braille technology, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Penn State.

Today kicks off National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)!

Since 1945, NDEAM has celebrated the impact people with disabilities have on the American workforce. This year's theme, "Celebrating Value and Talent," honors the skills and contributions of Americans with disabilities, carrying that spirit forward into America's 250th birthday.

At NSITE, this month reflects exactly what we do every day: connecting employers with talented professionals who are blind or have low vision and helping build workplaces where that talent can thrive. Employment is about independence, opportunity, and the chance to contribute skills that too often go overlooked.

Join us this October as we celebrate the achievements of blind and low vision professionals, and the real, lasting value they bring to the workforce.
