From moon dirt to liquid mirrors for space: The Capital Region is one of the top places for the nation’s most advanced defense-oriented research and development.

awards in New York’s 20th Congressional District (NY-20), which primarily covers the Capital Region, totaled more than $29M over the last five years. That was the 26th greatest amount among congressional districts nationwide, 6th in the Northeast, and 1st in NY.

Local firms that have worked on DARPA contracts include Kitware Inc., GE Aerospace, GE Vernova, University at Albany, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, M&P Labs (Lucideon), Crystal IS, IBM Research.
