As we wrap up , we remember the accomplishments of New York City’s own revolutionaries: The Young Lords. Known for their work providing mutual aid to the Brown and Black communities of Harlem, they provided free meals, liberation education, and healthcare in the 1960s and 1970s.

Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the cultural and historic accomplishments of our Hispanic and Latino brothers and sisters. We honor the Young Lords, whose work, along with so many others, helped shape our fight for a more just New York, regardless of race, nationality, and immigration status.

Citizen Action joined the Days of Action to register voters and talk about the need for leaders to prioritize working families. We must see Temporary Disability Insurance expanded and improved because when you get sick and can’t work, $170 a week just doesn’t cut it.

No one should have to question how to afford groceries, rent, or how to keep their lights on when they’re too sick or hurt to work.

Last night we came together to celebrate Our Everyday Heroes! We’re grateful to have had a full room of members, organizers, community leaders, and friends celebrating six incredible people who are putting people power into action in communities across New York.

We were honored to recognize Assemblymember Grace Lee, Assemblymember Jessica González-Rojas, Onondaga County Legislator Mo Brown, Marco “August” Rey-Llanes of the Southern Tier, Antonia Francois of NYC, and Arran Thomas of Central New York. Their leadership is a reminder of what’s possible when ordinary people come together to create extraordinary change.

This Saturday, our members were part of a coordinated organizing statewide organizing effort to mobilize voters, protect access to the ballot, and make sure New Yorkers have the information and support they need to participate in the November election.

As part of the Weekend of Democracy, Citizen Action also launched its Democracy Defense Voter Pledge, calling on New Yorkers to commit to defending our elections and exercising our collective power.

This Climate Week, we joined Assemblymember Sarahana Shrestha for the Peoples’ Action Utility Strategy Session in NYC. With a room full of advocates from across NY and beyond, we discussed how we’re going to make clean, affordable, renewable energy for all to lower our bills, hold greedy utilities accountable, and combat climate change.

Huge thanks to Assemblymember Shrestha for her continued leadership on this effort, Peoples’ Action for hosting us, PUSH Buffalo, Columbus Stand Up, and everyone else who joined.
