CONGRATS! 🎓👩🏿‍🎓 A native of Guyana, Yvonne Mickle went on to spend decades of her life in St. Maarten before moving to the Capital Region in 2021. It was while living in the island nation that her educational diplomas were lost to the destruction of multiple hurricanes that tore through the region.

A medical technician, she would work the night shift before coming to BOCES to take classes, which she enrolled in in 2025. Mickle said she wanted to eventually work as a nurse, which she previously did in St. Maarten. She plans to continue her education now that she has obtained her GED. 👏

The Capital Region o West Indian Association Inc. (CRWIA) extends its deepest, most heartfelt condolences and prayers to the families, loved ones, and communities affected by the tragic capsizing of the MV Barima in Guyana.

Though many of us now call the United States home, our roots, hearts, and cultural bonds remain forever tied to the Caribbean. As part of the West Indian and Caribbean diaspora, we feel this grief deeply alongside our brothers and sisters in Guyana and across the globe following the worst maritime tragedy in the nation's history.

When one part of our Caribbean family hurts, we all hurt. Words alone cannot erase the pain of such a devastating loss, but together, as a community in the diaspora, we can offer our collective strength, prayers, and solidarity to help uplift those who are suffering.
