Access to oral health care shouldn’t depend on where a child lives.

On June 17–18, our Community Dental Health Coordinator, Christine, screened 27 children ages 10 months to 8 years at Ardent Solutions in Wellsville, NY as part of My Healthy Smile NY.

What we found underscores the importance of early intervention:
🦷 Only 2 of 27 children had an established dental home
🦷 Several children were identified as having signs of decay
🦷 Fluoride varnish was applied to nearly every child screened to help protect developing smiles
🦷 Many families face a nearly two-hour drive to access pediatric dental care

Located in rural Allegany County, communities like Wellsville continue to experience significant barriers to oral health access—especially for young children.

As we approach the end of Year 2 of My Healthy Smile NY, moments like these remind us why this work matters. Through grant-funded outreach (thank you Delta Dental Insurance Company and Henry Schein, Inc.!), screenings, preventive care, and care coordination, we are helping children access services earlier and giving families support they might not otherwise have.

We remain hopeful that continued funding will allow us to keep building healthier futures—and reaching more communities across New York State.

Since 2017, New York State has required DEA-registered prescribers to complete education in pain management, palliative care, and addiction. This updated course covers the eight required New York State topics and incorporates current evidence, best practices, and lessons learned since the mandate was first introduced.

The course also addresses topics included in the federal Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act and may be applied toward the federal 8-hour training requirement.

Through literature reviews, case studies, and clinical experience, participants will strengthen their understanding of safe prescribing practices, substance use disorders, and their role in addressing the opioid epidemic while providing effective patient care.

This 3-hour course fulfills New York State's mandated education requirement.
