We've had several inquiries about the effect of Hurricane Matthew on Haiti in general and on Fontaine and St. Gabriel's School in particular. Here's the message we received today from Pierre Louis:

"I have had some news from home. In my village the situation is not bad so far. Everyone seems to be fine. They only have some rain and winds. The southern part of Haiti is hurting the most and flooding. Please keep praying as many people are suffering already from this hurricane, it's just too bad."

MaryBeth and Bob Buchner were in attendance as the Cardinal Gibbons Council of the Knights of Columbus sponsored a fund-raising Mardi Gras on behalf of St. Gabriel’s School on March 1st in Fayetteville, NC. The festivities took place in the social hall of St. Patrick’s Church. The hall was decorated in a celebratory New Orleans’ Mardi Gras theme and the event was complete with a five-piece musical ensemble playing upbeat New Orleans’ Jazz. Father Noone spoke about Friends of Fontaine, gave a little history, and shared that our purpose is changing lives in Haiti through outreach and education.

Here are some updates from Pierre-Louis Joizil, Founder & President of St. Gabriel's School. Students came to school on September 2nd to learn about their classes and receive school supplies (included in each student's sponsorship). Students are allowed to not wear their uniforms this month, as classes are just beginning. Many dressed up in their better clothing anyway to make a good impression on their first day back. We will also purchase new textbooks this month to lend to students for the year, building our library and sparing students the cost of buying their own. "A world of thanks for all your help," from Pierre-Louis and the Friends of Fontaine.

A movie recommendation from the Friends of Fontaine! "A Small Act" (available on Netflix) shows the lives of students preparing to enter secondary school in Kenya and the impact of a sponsorship program on the community. Their program is similar to our work in Haiti. Your support can change so many lives!

Our August newsletter is finished: check it out for more updates from Haiti!
