October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month. Each week we will be sharing a fact about Down syndrome and a resource offered by the Down Syndrome Aim High Resource Center.

Did you know Down syndrome is named after a British professor Dr. John Langdon Down who first characterized the condition in the 1800’s and gave it his last name. He did not have Down syndrome. People with Down syndrome are “People” first. They should not be referred to as “the Down’s kid” or “the Down’s person”. They should always be referred to by their name first and then, if necessary, mention that they have Down syndrome.

The Down Syndrome Aim High Resource Center at the Center for Disability Services provides Down Syndrome Education 101 Trainings to schools and community organizations? A big part of these trainings includes the use of People First Language and highlighting the many achievements of all our loved ones with Down syndrome. For more information on our trainings, and to schedule a training, please reach out to our Education Coordinator, Namita Modasra at [email protected]
