This week is , an annual observation started more than 40 years ago in response to a surge in the number of attempts to censor or remove books in libraries, schools, and bookstores.

Today, libraries face record numbers of challenges to the books on their shelves. Contrary to narratives suggesting that concerned parents are driving these challenges, data from ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom suggests otherwise – 92% of these challenges came from pressure groups and government officials in 2025.

The freedom to read is about more than books on a shelf. It’s about having access to ideas and having the opportunity to decide what we think about them. The freedom to read is worth protecting.

The Dollywood Foundation has established September 25 as “Give Like Dolly Day” to honor Dolly Parton and celebrate the impact of the Imagination Library.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is a book-gifting program that mails free, high-quality books to children from birth to age five, regardless of their family’s income.
