๐—Ÿ๐—ข๐—ข๐—ž: Race to Net Zero Philippines and Iloilo City Explore Pathways to Advance Cities Race to Zero

Race to Net Zero Philippines (RTNZ PH), together with the ECCP - European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, held a strategic meeting with the Iloilo City Government led by Hon. Raisa Treรฑas on June 8, 2026, to explore opportunities for Iloilo City to participate in the Cities Race to Zero initiative โ€” a global campaign that mobilizes cities to accelerate climate action, strengthen resilience, and advance the transition toward a net-zero future.

The discussion marks an important milestone in expanding local government participation in the Race to Zero movement in the Philippines. As the climate sustainability arm of ECCP and the official national accelerator of the UN-backed Race to Zero campaign, RTNZ PH continues to work with cities, institutions, and stakeholders to accelerate climate leadership and translate global climate ambitions into measurable local action.

From active mobility and renewable energy initiatives to river rehabilitation, mangrove restoration, waste reduction, and water security efforts, Iloilo City is well-positioned to demonstrate how climate action can be integrated into urban development, economic growth, and community well-being.

The strategic meeting demonstrated that achieving a net-zero future requires action not only from businesses and institutions, but also from cities that are at the forefront of delivering solutions that directly impact communities.

As an archipelagic nation, the Philippines depends on healthy oceans and marine ecosystems for food security, livelihoods, biodiversity, and climate resilience. Yet these vital ecosystems continue to face growing pressures from climate change.

This World Ocean Day, Race to Net Zero Philippines highlights the critical role of oceans in achieving a climate-resilient and net-zero future. Protecting our oceans is not only an environmental imperativeโ€”๐—ถ๐˜ ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—ฎ ๐—ฐ๐—น๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ.

Because climate action extends beyond reducing emissionsโ€”it also means safeguarding the natural ecosystems that sustain life, protect communities, and strengthen resilience. This reflects the UNFCCC's call to steward forests, oceans, and biodiversity in pursuit of a climate-resilient and net-zero future

As climate risks continue to grow, the need for action that is practical, people-centred, and built to last has never been more urgentโ€”because the most effective climate solutions are those that ๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐˜€, ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—บ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€, and ๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜.

This World Environment Day, Race to Net Zero Philippines joins the call for climate action that delivers real outcomes for the communities. Achieving a net-zero future requires more than commitment, it requires measurable action and collaboration across sectors.

As the official Philippine platform of the UN-backed Race to Zero campaign, we continue to support and mobilize organizations and institutions to transform climate commitments into practical action.

๐—Ÿ๐—ข๐—ข๐—ž: During the LNU DICT Podcast: Digital Climate Futures, Race to Net Zero Philippines Campaign Lead Ms. Dawn Cabigon joined leaders from government and the digital sector to discuss the critical intersection of climate action, governance, technology, and community empowerment.

During the session, Ms. Cabigon emphasized that the Philippines can no longer afford to be a passive observer in the climate crisis. As one of the world's most disaster-prone countries, climate action must be translated into concrete commitments and measurable results.

As the official Philippine platform of the UN-backed Race to Zero campaign, Race to Net Zero Philippines continues to mobilize organizations across sectors to strengthen climate resilience at the local level, build transparent and accountable climate action.

The discussion explored where action is needed mostโ€”within local communities such as Leyte, where climate risks highlight the importance of strong governance, collaboration, and resilience-building. It also highlighted the importance of digital infrastructure, connectivity, climate data, early warning systems, and digital literacy in empowering communities to respond to climate risks and build sustainable futures.

This participation emphasizes that climate resilience is not the responsibility of one sector alone. It requires collaboration among government, academia, civil society, youth, and the private sector.
