How do we move students away from rote memorization and toward true word mastery? In our 3rd Professional Learning Hub last September 25, resource speaker Marissa Maningat addressed this exact challenge by walking partner educators through a structured, 5-day plan to teach individual heart words alongside a simple cumulative review system designed to make learning stick long-term.

Before the session, many educators shared common classroom hurdlesโ€”most notably a concern that students were relying on memorization rather than decoding, alongside uncertainty around daily pacing and long-term retention routines.

By the end of the workshop, teachers walked away feeling motivated, energized, and equipped with a clear toolkit. Participants expressed confidence in adopting practical multi-sensory techniques like arm tapping, sliding, and pounding, as well as implementing structured cumulative reviews ranging from daily to quarterly check-ins.

The Philippines saw its highest PISA scores yet, but there's a critical detail hiding in the numbers.

While our students made real gains in Reading, Math, and Science, only 31% reached baseline reading proficiency, and the learning gap between wealthy and low-income students continues to widen (+41 pts vs. +15 pts).

Better PISA scores at age 15 don't start in high schoolโ€”they start in Kinder, Grade 1, and Grade 2 when children learn to read with understanding. Thatโ€™s where BINHI comes in to build on the foundation. ๐Ÿ“–
