The Philippine education crisis needs urgent, collective action. A 2022 World Bank report revealed that 91% of Filipino 10-year-olds struggle to read and understand simple age-appropriate text. This pressing issue will be highlighted in GMA Public Affairs' documentary special, Rebuilding Broken Rooms, hosted by Alden Richards, airing on August 8 at 9:30 PM.

One of our partner schools, DepEd Rosauro Almario Elementary School - Manila, will be featured in the program. Seeing the daily realities our partner schools face reminds us why dedicated literacy support is so critical.

Through this feature, we also connected with DepEd Ciudad Nuevo Elementary School in Naic, Cavite, where we provided essential learning and instructional materials to support their teachers and students.

At BINHI, we remain strongly committed to grounding our programs in the Science of Readingโ€”an evidence-based approach to teaching literacy that ensures every child acquires effective reading and comprehension skills.

Together with our partner schools, teachers, volunteers, and advocates, we will keep working to build a future where no child is left behind in reading!

The Philippines' education crisis remains one of the country's most pressing challenges, with millions of students struggling to read, overcrowded classrooms becoming the norm, and many schools still lacking adequate facilities years after the pandemic.

A 2022 World Bank report found that 91 percent of Filipino children aged 10 were unable to read and understand a simple text appropriate for their age, underscoring what education experts have described as a severe learning crisis.

The issue takes center stage in "Rebuilding Broken Rooms: A GMA Public Affairs Education Special," airing Aug. 8, with actor Alden Richards traveling to some of the country's most underserved schools to examine the realities behind the statistics.

We are beyond thrilled to have been part of this documentary, which allowed us to share our efforts in addressing learning poverty. During our visit, we distributed school supplies to Ciudad Nuevo Elementary School to support their instructional and learning needs.

We were truly blessed to meet Principal Carlene, who graciously welcomed us. Despite operating in a modular setup, the school community remains resilient in accommodating students and fostering a nurturing learning environment.

In our June 19 post commemorating Jose Rizal's birthday anniversary, we revisited Doรฑa Victorinaโ€™s Lesson on True Colors, a thought-provoking piece written by Ms. Marisse T. Sonidoโ€”the 1st Prize Winner for the High School Category in the 2011 PreMYo Rizal.

Sixteen years after she first penned those words and fifteen years since winning the prize, BINHI reached out to Ms. Sonido to invite her to look back on her winning essay. We asked her to reflect on her work through the lens of today's social and political climate and her personal journey.

Her reflection hits right at the core of our current reality:

"Rizalโ€™s works highlighted how social class, colonialism, and contradicting ideologies make it difficult for us to weave a common national identity. Today, it only gets increasingly difficult to feel a sense of unity amidst opposing political allegiances and our cultural diaspora all over the world. If we are not careful, that division will become what defines us."

Ms. Sonido reminds us that a nation isn't just a place on a mapโ€”itโ€™s a community of people. Whether we are serving in local classrooms or supporting loved ones across the globe, nation-building lives in the care, responsibility, and commitment we show to one another.

How are you choosing to show up for our national community today? Share your thoughts below! ๐Ÿ‘‡

Bridging the literacy gap is never easy, but it becomes possible because of the tireless volunteers who show up for every activity. From testing to tutoring to storytelling, every volunteer hour matters and brings our BINHI Scholars closer to reading success.

The event may be tiring, but it was truly worth it as it is always more meaningful to share what we do when we know we are backed by such a supportive volunteer community.

Huge thanks to iVolunteer Philippines for opening doors for us at the biggest volunteer expo in the country. Volunteerism and nation-building truly go hand in hand, and you make it easier for organizations like ours to meet everyday heroes.

We canโ€™t wait to see you in our upcoming activities, BINHI Reading Warriors!

For those who missed us at the expo, you can still sign up and explore our volunteer opportunities here: https://www.ivolunteer.com.ph/organization/440/event
