❗️Absolutely appalling and heartbreaking to read of the sexual abuse of older vulnerable residents of a residential care home.

✅ Seniors ASAP Trust appreciates the fact that this case was prosecuted through the Court system with an outcome that may serve to protect others.

📣 Unfortunately, there is a need for us to raise awareness about the times when this doesn’t occur.

❌ Did you know that charges against perpetrators of violence towards older vulnerable people are sometimes just NOT pursued?

❌ That the most vulnerable will sometimes not be given a chance to be protected within the Court system?

While we are currently seeing a few headlines of this nature - there are many cases that will never make it to the Courtroom… 😢

A caregiver at a residential care facility was jailed for more than a decade after ra**ng an elderly woman and sexually assaulting another.

📣2026 World Elder Abuse Day has arrived.

We have had some horrific headlines this year about cases of Elder Abuse & Neglect and these are just the cases that become featured for one reason or another. The sooner we have a mandated Adult Protection Service in Aotearoa the better.

In acknowledgment of World Abuse Awareness Day this year we celebrate all older people and the ways in which they enrich our lives, whanau, families, and communities through their wisdom, experience, resilience, and care.

Let's celebrate their stories, honour their experiences, and recognise the valuable contributions they continue to make every day.

Together, we can create communities where every older person feels valued, respected, connected, and safe. A kind conversation, a shared cup of tea, or a simple phone call can make a world of difference.

Everyone deserves to age with dignity, confidence, connection, and a sense of belonging and in a way that is meaningful for them.

Today, and every day, let's show older people that they are seen, heard, appreciated, and respected.

📣 At Seniors ASAP Trust, we regularly support people who are caring for their ageing loved ones. Carer burnout is a significant risk, and when carers are unsupported, there is an increased risk of unintentional abuse and/or neglect. Being informed about available services, and having access to systems that support both older people and their carers, is essential to maintaining safety, wellbeing, and quality of life. 😊

There is an insightful podcast on the Eldernet website called 'Caring for Aging Parents: What you need to know with Esther Perriam', it's well worth listening to 🙌

We would also like to note that an Enduring Power of Attorney can be established in several different ways, each with varying costs. In addition, there is no cost to file (submit) an application to the Court made under the PPPR Act.
