In the latest article on the Desh Apnayen blog, Mr. Vishal Talreja reflects on how active citizenship is nurtured in everyday spaces. He writes: “Democracy can be practised every day, such as in classrooms that hold space for students to feel safe and express their ideas; in families where differences are discussed with respect; and in communities where people listen to one another with curiosity rather than judgement.”

By acting out the democratic process – allotting election symbols, organising rallies, and submitting memoranda – students from Government Higher School, Chikanya in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur district gained more than just knowledge, they developed agency. Now they independently take the initiative to achieve cleanliness in school. This proves that when students are actively involved in civic activities, they become invested in the outcomes.

At Government High School, Morvan in Madhya Pradesh’s Neemuch district, student members of the ACTiZENS’ Club programme identified a major concern: a lack of access to clean drinking water due to a damaged water tank. They acted proactively to address this pressing issue and spoke to the principal. The principal promptly took action, ensuring the installation of a new water tank. In this video, hear how this experience helped the students realise that problems can be solved when they take initiative and speak up.

True citizenship goes beyond institutions; it starts with the personal journey of developing empathy, promoting dignity, and encouraging agency. Schools offering safe spaces for dialogue and self-reflection can transform students from passive observers into active changemakers like Pallavi. The future of democracy depends on citizens’ ability to foster classrooms where young people feel seen, heard, and able to shape their world.

Earth Day is a reminder that our planet needs us—now more than ever.

It’s a day to reflect on the importance of protecting our air, water, and natural resources, and to recognise that every choice and every action matters.

Today, we invite you to watch an inspiring short video showcasing how the ACTiZENS’ Club members from two schools in Madhya Pradesh—Government HSS, Padliya (Dewas), and PM Shri GHSS, Aliganj (Raisen)—are making efforts to care for the environment.

Happy Earth Day!

Mr. Manoj Kumar Swamy from Government Higher Secondary School, Motipura (Mandsaur district), and Mr. Lokesh Chauhan from Government High School, Bassi ki Bawdi (Neemuch district) are among our 1,000+ SPOC (single point of contact) teachers conducting the ACTiZENS’ Club programme at our Madhya Pradesh partner schools.

Our goal is to shape Alert, Informed, and Active Citizens through a nearly year-long programme designed for students and offered free of cost to our partner schools.

Given the number of academic and administrative responsibilities teachers from government and other schools have to shoulder regularly, some school principals or teachers hesitate to conduct the ACTiZENS’ Club programme activities in their school. We have deep empathy for all our stakeholders because they make the time to receive training on the experiential activities curated by our team and facilitating them for their students.

In this short video, Messrs Swami and Chauhan talk about their experience.

Thank you, sirs, for all your support, and for playing a pivotal role in nurturing active citizenship in your schools.

Remembering Dr. B. R. Ambedkar on the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti—a visionary leader whose ideas reshaped the foundation of modern India. As the principal architect of the Constitution of India, he established the pillars of justice, equality, and democracy.

May we continue to be ACTiZENS and uphold the values that he stood for.
