Plastic pollution doesn't begin at the coast. It begins upstream.

On World Environment Day 2026, experts, scientists, and conservation practitioners came together at a national workshop organised by the Fishery Survey of India (FSI) to address one of India's growing environmental challenges marine debris.

A key finding highlighted during the workshop: the monsoon acts as an "accelerator", flushing nearly 46% of India's annual marine litter into the ocean through rivers and coastal entry points.

The discussions reinforced an important message: marine pollution is not just a coastal issue,it is a river-basin issue that requires coordinated action from source to sea.

From recovering ghost fishing gear to promoting innovative biodegradable alternatives and strengthening catchment-to-coast monitoring, the workshop highlighted pathways towards a cleaner and healthier marine future.

Because protecting our oceans starts long before the waste reaches the shore.

The fishermen told us. We responded together. πŸ™ŒπŸ΄
When seahorses get caught as bycatch, they often don't survive. So we built a network fishermen, forest staff, and marine scientists to change that.
This World Environment Day, three rescued seahorses returned to the creeks of Ratnagiri. That's what conservation looks like on the ground.
