“Bog or fen: could you tell the difference?

Fens might not be Ireland’s best-known habitats, but they are fascinating, full of life and well worth getting to know!

Join us at the Bog Bothy in Cloontuskert, Co. Roscommon on Saturday 12 September, from 11am–12.30pm, for a fun and family-friendly Fen Swatch Event.

This event will be hosted by Nuala Madigan, Chief Executive Officer of the Irish Peatland Conservation Council

Together, we’ll get curious about peatlands, explore what makes a fen different from a bog, and discover some of the plants and species you can look out for yourself. 🔎

You’ll also get the chance to try out the Fen Swatch, a simple way to explore and learn about the species found in these special habitats.

Whether you’re a peatland expert or have never set foot on a fen before, everyone is welcome – no prior experience needed!

Our Community Noticeboard WhatsApp group has proven to be a very useful tool for community members in receiving community notices by WhatsApp 📱, details of which went out to all households in Cloontuskert by letter in March 2024 🌟

Between giving details of events, points to note etc, it is great to have such a handy medium in WhatsApp which is currently one of the most popular phone applications out there 👌

Thanks very much to everyone who has joined our Community Noticeboard. If you still wish to join, please let us know by direct message.

For our next Bog Bothy event, we are delighted to introduce Autobiographical Landscapes 🏡

A creative placemaking and performance workshop with local artist Luke Casserly

What is the first landscape you remember – and what story does it hold?

Join performance maker Luke Casserly for a participatory workshop exploring our personal relationships to landscape through creative writing and performance.

Participants are invited to bring along an object connected to the first landscape they remember - this could be something found there, or something symbolic that carries a memory of that place.

This tapestry of objects will form a brief show and tell, designed to open out conversations around our relationship to landscape through an autobiographical lens. An opportunity to hand the microphone over to a multiplicity of different landscapes to hear what stories they might have to tell.

Location: Bog Bothy Cloontuskert
Date: Sunday 6th September
Time: 1-3.00pm

Bog Bothy is a partnership project between the Irish Architecture Foundation and 12th Field, co-created with local communities. The Bog Bothy 2026 tour is funded by Tóchar.
