FROM AN ORPHAN TO A SKILLED PROFESSIONAL – A STORY OF HOPE ❤️
Sometimes I sit quietly and ask myself, “What would have become of some of these children if we had chosen not to sacrifice?”
This is Akomea story.
About 13 years ago, we met Akomea. He was an orphan with no one to care for him or believe in his future. Through Touching Lives Outreach International, we made a promise: we would not let poverty or loneliness decide his destiny.
We supported him through Junior High School and enrolled him in Senior High School. Along the way, we realized that the traditional academic path wasn’t bringing out the best in him. But instead of giving up, we looked deeper. We discovered he was gifted with his hands and had a passion for building.
So we made another difficult decision. We transferred him to a Building and Construction programme, where he spent three years learning a skill he truly loved.
Today, Akomea is doing well. He has completed his training, is working, building a life for himself, and standing proudly on his own feet.
Just today, he sent me a message thanking us. He said if it had not been for Touching Lives Outreach International, our supporters, and everyone who believed in him, he doesn’t know where life would have taken him.
Reading those words brought tears to my eyes.
Back then, we didn’t have enough sponsors. Many days, I used my own salary to keep him in school while a few kind-hearted supporters stood with us. It wasn’t easy. There were moments we wondered how we would pay the next bill, but we kept going because we believed one child was worth fighting for.
Today, when I look at the “before” and “after,” I am reminded that love changes lives, education breaks cycles, and kindness creates futures.
To every donor, partner, volunteer, and friend who has ever supported Touching Lives Outreach International, this success belongs to you too. You may never have met Akomea , but you helped write his story. Your generosity gave an orphan dignity, hope, and a future.
Not every journey is easy. Sometimes we help people who never come back to say thank you. Sometimes we face disappointment and ungratefulness. But then there are stories like Akomea—stories that remind us why we started and why we must never stop.
Over the coming weeks, I will be sharing more of the lives you have helped transform and introducing you to some of the children we are currently supporting.
