They were joined by champions from our 'For the Europe We Value', Corrinne Hasson, Executive Director of the National Women's Council of Ireland , Maria McCloskey, Executive Director of Irish Rule of Law International (IRLI) and Lucky Khambule, co-Founder of Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland (MASI).

European Movement Ireland was delighted to host a civil society forum on the role of the EU and civil society in preventing violence against women and girls, which remains an urgent issue across the island of Ireland.

We were joined by Kathleen Funchion-Sinn Féin, Sarah Benson, CEO of Women's Aid, Corrinne Hasson, Executive Director of the National Women's Council of Ireland and Martina Walsh, Policy Analyst at CyberSafeKids for a wide-reaching discussion on how EU legislation such as the 2024 EU Directive on Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence can help in the fight to eradicate gender based violence (GBV). Together with panellists we discussed the urgency of implementing and monitoring existing regulations and policies, structural drivers of GBV, intersectionality and barriers facing different groups of women to access protection and justice, the need for prevention and education and the role of social media in perpetuating GBV.

The forum brought together civil society organisations, policy makers and citizens to gather their recommendations for effective action in Ireland the EU.
