At 17, Sofia thought she had lost everything.
When armed men attacked her village in northern Mozambique, she fled with her siblings, surviving for days without food or water. In the chaos, they became separated from their mother.
“I didn’t know where she was, and it was very painful for me. I lived with fear and uncertainty every day.”
After reaching a resettlement area, Sofia was identified as an unaccompanied child and received support through Plan International's child protection programme, including counselling, education support, cash assistance, and hygiene and dignity kits.
Then came the news she had been hoping for.
“The happiest moment of my life was hearing that my parents are alive and knowing I am not completely alone.”
Across conflict-affected communities, child protection services do more than meet immediate needs. They help children recover, reconnect with loved ones, and regain hope for the future.
Every child deserves safety, protection and the chance to rebuild their life.
