GFS - Ireland

GFS - Ireland GFS is a Church of Ireland youth organisation active in 80 branches throughout Ireland.

The Girls’ Friendly Society was founded in London in 1875 by an Irishwoman – Mrs Elizabeth Townsend to provide support and skills training for girls who came from the country to work in the city. It was a society for friendship and recreation in which all girls might share, bound together in a fellowship of Christian love and service. The movement spread rapidly all over England and came to Irelan

d in 1877 and also to America and Australia about the same time. The Girls’ Friendly Society is the oldest Church of Ireland organisation for girls and women. Now over 135 years later our Society has broadened its scope and offers an even wider appeal. The motto, purpose and prayer has not changed down the years but one generation after another has found fresh inspiration in it. Today the Girls Friendly Society is active in eighty branches throughout Ireland, a wide spectrum of interest is covered in the badge syllabus, which includes a study of the natural world, the community and the church, handcrafts and skills, information technology, sports and outdoor pursuits, as well as participating in fund raising to demonstrate our will to help others, both locally and globally.

Bishop Wilkinson spoke at General Synod this afternoon commending the work of the uniformed organisations like GFS and Boys’ Brigade in working with children in our parishes. He also spoke of the intergenerational worship through music, in the all age choir in St Mary's Church , Bunclody last Sunday. Great things happening in CFO!

Thank you Lord for giving me the brand new year.
Help me live the way I should with each new day.
Give me gentle wisdom that I might help a friend.
Give me strength and courage to lend a shoulder.
Help me to fill the year ahead with good things,
each new day filled with joy and happiness.
Amen.

πŸ’— A huge thank you to all our members, past members, and families who supported our 150th Years Celebration Walk today! πŸ‘£πŸŽ‰

We were so proud to take part in this Global 🌍 GFS Event, marking such a special milestone together. ✨

We began with a short reminder of the beginnings of GFS πŸ“–, followed by the prayer written by World President Jeanne Withanage of Sri Lanka, πŸ™ read by our Branch Leader Georgina. She was joined by current member Sorcha, our youngest leader Molly, and past member Valerie – a wonderful mix of past, present, and future. πŸ’«

Thank you all for being part of this meaningful day and for helping us celebrate 150 years of GFS. πŸ’—

Dublin & Glendalough branches met on Saturday September 27th for a picnic and scavenger hunt walk at Russborough House joined by Meath & Kildare Diocesan Treasurer Violet. πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ

We took shelter in the hippodrome for our picnic escaping rain. We then enjoyed the 2.5km loop walk overlooking Blessington lakes and visited the playground on return. πŸ›

A lovely afternoon marking 150th anniversary of World GFS.πŸ₯°
