1 in 3 cocoa workers in Ghana are children?
After noticing many cocoa farmers had no safe place to leave their young children while working, cocoa Farmer Dora Atiiga from Ghana set up a community school.
Starting with 6 kids in her own home, now 170 children are learning instead of working.
This is what happens when women farmers claim their power and confidence - supported by programs like Fairtrade’s Women’s School of Leadership.

At Fairtrade, we say no to child labour.
We know it’s still a huge problem affecting almost 138 million children globally according to the International Labour Organization.
Not only do we prohibit child labour in our Fairtrade Standards, we continue to fight the root causes. This means addressing poverty, progressing towards living incomes, and strengthening farmer cooperatives to prevent and remediate child labour.
No certification can guarantee 100 % child-free labour, but if it’s found in our supply chains, we take action immediately.
Ending child labour requires action from everyone: farmers, businesses, buyers, governments, and consumers. Purchasing Fairtrade contributes to farmers building livelihoods where children can go to school rather than work.

Fabiana Aparecida de Souza Silva, a Fairtrade coffee producer in Brazil, as well as a dairy farmer, is one example of how working with nature can create lasting impact – and she’s not alone.
88% of relevant studies on Fairtrade’s impact, from 2021-24, show Fairtrade farmers are adopting climate-resilient farming practices – with ripples that can protect both land and livelihoods.
A fair supply chain also means a sustainable one. This means looking after people as well as the planet.

Carlito Alves, coffee farmer and manager in Timor-Leste, is one example of how Fairtrade farmers can create lasting change.
87% of relevant studies on Fairtrade's impact show economic benefits for farmers like Carlito and for cooperatives (Evidence Mapping Report 2025).
From improved market access to stronger knowledge, infrastructure, and community resources, these benefits ripple far beyond individual producers and can contribute to fairer, more sustainable and more resilient supply chains.
