The Irish Osteoporosis Society (IOS) was founded by Professor Moira O’Brien in 1996 as a patient support organisation for those suffering with Osteoporosis and their families. From the outset, the IOS has been dedicated to reducing the incidence of Osteoporosis, a preventable bone disease in most cases, and promoting bone health. The IOS provides information to the public and health professionals

on all aspects of the disease and offers support to people with Osteoporosis and everyone at risk from the disease. The IOS has the following aims:

Significantly decrease the number of people affected by Osteoporosis

Increase the awareness of the problem of Osteoporosis in Ireland

Provide support, advice and information for people suffering from Osteoporosis

Establish a network of local awareness groups

Distribute up-to-date information to doctors and healthcare workers on current methods of prevention and treatment

Encourage research into this area in Ireland

The Irish Osteoporosis Society is a charitable organisation and as such relies on our members’ generosity and support to continue our activities. Helpline – The IOS operates a Patient Support Helpline throughout the year. The Helpline is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

2. Press and Advertising – The IOS regularly issues press releases and drafts articles on Osteoporosis for the general media and the medical press. The Society also runs advertising campaigns to promote awareness certain events.

3. Literature & Promotional Materials

The IOS distributes Osteoporosis information (leaflets, books, posters etc.) to Society members, members of the public, GPs, nurses, physiotherapists, other health professionals, HSE staff, clinics etc.

4. Our website irishosteoporosis.ie is a comprehensive source of information for both the public and health professionals

5. Newsletter – We produce an informative and up to date bi monthly e newsletters.

6. Public Lectures – Our Health Promotion Officer delivers Osteoporosis information seminars in locations around the country throughout the year. These include senior citizens groups, community groups, women’s groups (e.g. ICA) pharmacies, schools, and the 50PlusExpos (Dublin, Cork and Galway) among others.

7. Schools Information DVD / Workbook – We have produced an Osteoporosis / bone health information DVD targeted at secondary school pupils along with an accompanying workbook and 140 slide Power Point presentation which can be adjusted for teh different age groups, for schools.

8. Awareness Groups – In order to educate and inform people around the country, the IOS has begun the process of establishing a national network of Osteoporosis awareness groups. If you would be interested in becoming part of a regional awareness group, please click here.

9. Annual Conference – The IOS hosts an international medical conference on Osteoporosis (for health professionals) each year with high-profile speakers from Ireland and around the world.

10. Patient Representation to Government – The IOS regularly meets with the Department of Health, the HSE, government ministers and other TDs to discuss policy relating to Osteoporosis and to brief them on issues and requirements in the treatment of the disease. National Helpline: (01) 637 5050

Make sure not to miss out on updating yourself with correct, accurate advice from the National experts in Ireland. Professor Moira O'Brien set up the first Osteoporosis clinic in Ireland and is the only Osteoporosis consultant in Ireland. Aoife Ni Eochaidh is a leading expert in womens and mens health. Michele O'Brien set up the first Falls prevention service in Ireland and has run the National Osteoporosis helpline for 23 years. Did you know that 75% of people with Incontinence issues can have this issue resolved? Did you know that the Irish Osteoporosis Society do not believe in treating this Silent Disease without a treatment that has been scientifically proven to reduce a person's risk of breaking bones? Did you know that most falls are preventable and the Irish Osteoporosis Society has guided those 80+ to significantly improve their bone health? Did you know that sitting or standing with your legs straight , while bending forward to touch your toes puts excess stress on the bones, discs and nerve in your back, which can and have broken bones in peoples backs? Professor Moira O’Brien is an anatomist and set up the first sports medicine masters in the British Isles wants everyone to be aware that even if you do not have bone loss this stretch should only be done by athletes.
