Dodder Action The Dodder and its tributaries are a fabulous natural amenity in Dublin that has sadly been abused and neglected for far too long.

Action group set up to clean the Dodder and its tributaries, improve facilities and amenities along its length and fulfil the potential of this fabulous natural resource. In 2010 members of the Irish Green Party and local residents organised clean ups of the river on approximately 12 weekends from the Firhouse Weir to Clonskeagh. Following on from this, members of the Green Party with the help of

a group of local people decided to organise cleanups along the river which was badly damaged in the devastating floods of October 2011. The short term goal of the group is to remove litter from the river and its surroundings, medium term to increase basic facilities such as increasing the amount of litter bins and benches along the route and long term to exploit its potential as a recreational area and find a solution to the dumping of rubbish in the river.

A New Chapter for St Mary’s Priory 🌿

Something very special is beginning in the heart of Tallaght Village.
A hugely ambitious nature restoration and rewilding project has just begun at St Mary’s Priory — a site steeped in centuries of history. We are setting out to restore some of the natural richness that would once have surrounded this remarkable place, reconnecting the Priory with its landscape, wildlife and heritage.

Inspired by Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ – Care for Our Common Home, faith communities around the world are being encouraged to give space back to nature and become custodians of creation.
Dodder Action has been invited to lead this exciting initiative, working with the Priory community and local volunteers to transform parts of the grounds into thriving habitats for native plants, pollinators, birds and other wildlife.

But we can’t do it alone.
We are looking for individuals, community groups and businesses who would like to get involved, volunteer, provide expertise or help fund the project.
Together, we can help St Mary’s Priory become a place where heritage and nature flourish side by side once again. 🌳🐝🦋

Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS) play a key role in 60% of recorded global species extinctions and are the sole factor responsible for 16% of documented global and animal extinctions. Given these sobering facts, Dodder Action are proud to be involved in the Rhododendron eradication currently underway in South Dublin's Glenasmole valley.

Earlier this year, Dodder Action was granted funding through the Community Water Development Fund and the Peatlands & Natura Community Engagement Scheme. With this funding we were able to engage Aquens Environmental Services Ltd. to undertake the formidable task of eradicating the Rhododendron from the valley.

Glenasmole valley is a special area of conservation and has the highest water quality in Dublin County. Rhododendron growth can significantly affect rivers - the dense canopy can shade out the riverbed, reducing light & oxygen, which can harm aquatic life. Additionally, Rhododendron can block access to riverbanks, preventing wildlife from feeding on the vegetation that provides food for invertebrates. This can lead to a decline in fish populations & other aquatic species that rely on riverbank vegetation for food & habitat.

Images taken earlier this week show that the eradication is well underway - thanks to the efforts of the Aquens team.

Facilitator Bio:

Rob Gandola is a wildlife consultant that specialises in amphibian and reptiles and their habitats. He has a particular soft spot for supporting community groups in making wetland habitats that benefit local wildlife populations. His experience in this field has lead to the creation of 20+ wildlife ponds since 2023 with the assistance of community and school groups in the greater Dublin area that also function as "living classrooms". Rob is also a pond consultant for Burren Beo's Hare's Corner initiative and Farming for Nature initiatives.

This event is supported by Kildare County Council Biodiversity Office, the Heritage Council, Marley Grange Residents Association, and the River Basin Management Service.

Parking:
There is some on street parking on either side of the linear park on Dargle Valley road and Marley Ct.

Please bring a camp seat to this riverside workshop, if possible
