We’re in. 🎪 BFBI is joining Climate Carnival 2026 - 15-16 September at Ballintubbert Gardens and House - five zones, four stages, 50+ speakers, 30+ sessions, live music, workshops, comedy, keynotes, activations, and a room where CEOs, farmers, scientists, policymakers, artists and activists end up cheek-and-jowl instead of in their usual separate industry events.

The theme From Silos to Systems covers four systems: Ocean, Food, Habitats, Culture. They are all connected - pull on any one thread and the others move - and so we have to treat them as such! BFBI will be there to participate in the discussions on how Irish businesses can begin taking the lead in the move to .

📣 Calling Irish businesses – would you like to participate in the groundbreaking Business of module at Trinity College Dublin and get support in developing a nature strategy for your organisation?

BFBI is delighted to continue to work with Dr Catherine Farrell, our Business Programme Advisor and Assistant Professor in Business and Nature at Trinity Business School on the module. Final-year students work through nature reporting frameworks with businesses to help identify opportunities and risks linked to dependencies and impacts on nature and ecosystem services.

Previous participants included BFBI members An Post, Gas Networks Ireland, Dublin Airport Authority, Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail, Scott Cawley Ltd. and Watermark Coffee – and all Irish businesses are welcome to apply.

💡 New database to help navigate over 2000 biodiversity portals, platforms and tools!

Scientists at UNEP-WCMC have developed a new database cataloguing 698 global, 200+ regional and 1,400 national online biodiversity data systems.

The database is built for a wide range of users, including:
🔸 governments,
🔸 businesses and financial institutions,
🔸 civil society and non-governmental organizations,
🔸 academics and researchers.

The database simplifies the search, making it easier to navigate categories and find the right portal, platform or tool, depending on the needs.

📦 A quieter revolution is happening in our shopping carts.

From 12 August 2026, new EU rules on packaging and packaging waste take effect. According to the European Commission, these measures will change how products are wrapped, shipped, and disposed of across the bloc.

Packaging uses huge amounts of raw materials and generates waste that ends up in landfills or our oceans. Some chemicals are harmful to health. The new rules tackle these problems head on.

Here is what changes:

Plastic packaging must include recycled content, with higher targets for 2030 and 2040. All packaging must be fully recyclable by 2030. Clear labels will make sorting trash easier. Unnecessary packaging and empty space in deliveries will be reduced.

Deposit and return systems will be boosted. Companies must offer reuse or refill options with no extra charge. From 2030, certain single-use packaging like ketchup packets and mini shampoo bottles will be banned where sustainable alternatives exist.

Brands using non-recyclable or harmful materials will pay to clean them up. Cancer-causing "forever" chemicals (PFAS) will be restricted in food packaging.

At the Mary Robinson Centre, we know environmental justice is about protecting both people and the planet. These rules recognise that waste affects communities, ecosystems, and future generations. They also create opportunities for businesses in recycling and sustainable solutions.

This is what a circular economy looks like. Less waste. Smarter design. Fairer responsibility.

But we must ensure these standards reach beyond Europe. Everyone deserves packaging that does not poison or pollute.
