Oona Doherty’s Lazarus (2016) is a bold and deeply affecting work from one of the most vital voices in contemporary dance today. Raw, confrontational, and emotionally charged, it explores masculinity, socio-economic stereotypes, and rebirth with unflinching physicality and humanity. Reimagined for the Luail ensemble, the work magnifies Doherty’s urgent search for hope and connection beneath the masks society asks us to wear.

2 dancers, a musician and a storyteller invite you into a world where movement, music and stories pass between people and across generations - exploring memory, connection and a long-lived life.

Directed and choreographed by Vivian Brodie Hayes, The Session features performer collaborators: dancers Lucia Kickham and Kelly Keesing, musician Blanca Altable, and storyteller Joe Brennan.

Presented in partnership with Spring Moves Short Days and the Stone Sessions

Funded by Creative Ireland Wexford County Council, CreativeIrl and the EU Presidency Culture Programme 2026, with support from LuailDance, Ireland's National Dance Company.

A huge congratulations to Belfast choreographer Oona Doherty, who has been newly elected to Aosdána, an affiliation of creative artists that honours those whose work has made an outstanding contribution to the arts in Ireland and supports members in dedicating themselves fully to their creative practice.

We are delighted to have supported Oona in her professional training and across her career journey, from funding the Dance degree at Ulster University through a special initiative programme, to supporting her artistic development through a Major Individual Artist Award (2016) funded by the . This award supported the creation of, Hard to Be Soft – A Belfast Prayer in Four Parts, a powerful work that was named the UK's No. 1 dance performance of 2019 by The Guardian. Oona’s work will feature as part of LuailDance's, Nōs, at The MAC on 6 November, as part of the Belfast International Arts Festival.

Lazarus, a work by award-winning West Belfast choreographer Oona Doherty, is set to be revived and performed alongside works from internationally acclaimed choreographers Akram Khan and Liz Roche in an extraordinary new triple-bill by Luail, Ireland’s national, all-island dance company.

Luail presents Nōs, a landmark triple bill of internationally acclaimed and defining contemporary dance works by choreographers Akram Khan, Oona Doherty and Liz Roche. Performed by Luail's extraordinary cast of eight dancers, the three pieces move from mythic worlds to raw human experience, revealing dance as a shared act of searching and connection.

As part of Luail’s access offering for our upcoming performance of Nōs at The MAC as part of Belfast International Arts Festival, we are working with access artist Mo Harte who will provide audio description and dance artist Helen Hall who will share a pre-show sensory workshop.

This will be available to all ticket holders who have booked to see the performance on 7 November at The MAC.

The pre-show workshop will take place at The MAC from 6.30pm- 7.15pm. There will be a short break of 30 minutes before the performance takes place at 7.45pm.

The audio description and sensory workshop are particularly helpful for people who are visually impaired, or blind. The sensory workshop is also helpful for people who would like to connect to the more sensory elements of the performance.
