Addiction Counsellors of Ireland

Addiction Counsellors of Ireland We are Ireland's leading accrediting body for Addiction Professionals. To generate and increase informed awareness of addiction.

By ensuring our members uphold the highest ethical standards and clinical competence we help safeguard those they support. Our History
On Friday 23rd October, 1987 a workshop was arranged by the Irish National Council on Alcoholism (INCA,) with the purpose of reviewing and evaluating the INCA counselling course. Following this workshop, it was decided that a professional accrediting body would be

established for Addiction Counsellors in Ireland. The Irish Association of Alcohol and Addiction Counsellors (IAAAC) was established in 1990 and at an Extraordinary General Meeting on April 13th 2013, the name of the organisation was changed by unanimous decision to the Addiction Counsellors of Ireland. This name change came as part of a comprehensive Strategic Communications and Public Relations Plan approved by the Board in October 2012 and had the specific aim of achieving the following objectives:

To improve engagement with the members of the organisation through structured communication. To position the organisation as a national authority and subject matter expert on addiction issues. To play an active role in counter measures for addiction.

📢 Significant development in Ireland's approach to drugs and addiction.

The Houses of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Drugs Use today published its Final Report, recommending the repeal of Section 3 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 and the full decriminalisation of the possession of drugs for personal use.

The recommendation follows extensive engagement with experts, service providers, people with lived experience, and families affected by addiction. Recognising that drug use in Ireland has changed significantly over recent decades, the Committee argues that policy must evolve accordingly and supports a health-led approach to drug use.

The Joint Committee on Drugs Use today published its Final Report, in which Members recommend the repeal of Section 3 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 in order to fully decriminalise the possession of drugs for personal use.

📈At 12 months, 79% of participants in Brandon House Treatment Centre's Adult Recovery Group (ARG) remained abstinent from alcohol and drugs.

The findings come from Recovery Without Walls, a mixed methods evaluation of the ARG, a community-based, abstinence-oriented recovery programme based on the Minnesota Model. The report explores outcomes relating to substance use, wellbeing, and recovery capital, and examines the role of community-based recovery as an alternative to residential treatment.
