VOICE - Voice of Irish Concern for the Environment

VOICE is an environmental non-profit campaigning to stop resource waste and pollution. We also work closely with communities and businesses.

We have been the leading voice in Ireland on waste and pollution issues for over 25 years. Our campaigns tackle the many issues around sustainable resource use and pollution. We provide practical solutions and work closely with the government to write ambitious policies around the circular economy. We inspire and empower everyone to rethink how they use material resources, encouraging everyone to

redesign with a circular approach. We believe in action at every level and in the power of people to encourage and drive change. In 2002 we led the charge for a tax on plastic bags. That achievement is heralded as one of the most successful environmental campaigns in the world, but it doesn't stop there. We have kept working hard and Ireland is now at a turning point for the transition to Circular Economy (C.E.). It is more important than ever to keep the pressure on. Our intention is to make Ireland C.E leaders in Europe.

Do you care about fashion, and its impact on the planet?

The EU's new Eco-design for Sustainable Products Regulation ( ) could have far-reaching implications for the future of fashion, from tackling textile waste to improving transparency across the industry.

🇫🇷 Happy Bastille Day!

France isn't just celebrating its revolution today-it's also leading a quiet revolution in the circular economy.

Since '23, France has required its main packaging Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO), Citeo, to dedicate at least 5% of the producer fees it collects to developing and promoting packaging reuse (Repak is our national PRO).

At VOICE, we think Ireland could learn from this approach. Our circular economy needs more than recycling; it needs investment in reuse.

What if, like the French, just 5% of the €100+ million in unredeemed deposits, collected by our plastic bottle and can PRO Re-turn, was earmarked for reuse?

It could have meant €5 million to help build Ireland's reuse infrastructure and accelerate a truly circular economy.

Last Saturday was the first ReStyle Dublin (Dun Laoighre) expo and it was a huge success!

A day full of sustainable fashion talks, workshops a d learnings!

VOICE was delighted to be part of this special day and have the opportunity to get sustainable fashion experts and practitionners together to discuss prevention and policy!

Our goal is was to explore the root causes of fast fashion and how we could make circular fashion the new norm.

Loads came out of these discussions, which we'll continue to explore in coming months.
The Galway ReStyle event will be all about consumers and citizens and what we wanna see happen in coming years for fashion to finally be sustainable and ethical.

This month the Cloth Nappy Incentive Scheme launched in the Rotunda Hospital with support of Dublin City Council and Rotunda Hospital.

The goals of the Cloth Nappy Incentive Scheme are to encourage the use of washable nappies in families that would have otherwise not tried them, and to normalise their use.

We aim to reach families that would have otherwise exclusively used disposable nappies, through providing them with a starter bundle of cloth nappies and wipes as well as guidance and support in using them.

Last month, we had the chance to support sustainable fashion in the workplace as part of Gilead's Earth Day celebration.

With multiple activities around sustainable fashion, here's what we achieved:

- A swap shop was help to env’courage staff to refresh their wardrobe without being new

- 10+ garments were repaired on-site thanks to our partners at Magic Thread, giving loved clothes a longer life.

- 25 staff members joined our Fabric of Change workshop to learn about the impacts of the fashion industry and discuss opportunities for circularity.

- Over 15kg (38 items) of clothing were donated to the UCC campaign, helping students access professional clothing as they take their first steps into the workplace.

In just one day, we've both delivered meaningful actions and provided tools for long lasting change.

VOICE CEO Tad Kirakowski told Ciara Kelly (Hard Shoulder - Newstalk) that Irish homes struggle to use the right bags for the compost bins.

“Where this conversation gets a little bit more tricky is when we look past the bags and we start to look at where most of us engage with those compostable materials and it's when we're getting the coffee on the go or the food on the go and the cup that you get it in.”

Waste experts on The Hard Shoulder have warned that Ireland is seeing more food waste going into general bins than compost.
