Last month our members enjoyed two memorable day tours to country houses and buildings of architectural interest.

On the 16th of May attendees enjoyed a trip to two 'Guinness Houses' in Co Kildare. The first stop was Leixlip Castle (where we were lucky enough to receive a marvelous, entertaining tour from Marina Guinness!), followed by lunch and visit to the Steam Museum and Lodge Park in Staffan.

On the 23rd of May guests visited Louth and Meath where they had a tour of Beauparc House by Lady Mount Charles, followed by a trip to the recently restored Collon Church, and Collon House where owners John Bentley-Dunn and Michael McMahon gave us lunch and a tour of the beautiful house and gardens.

We would like to thank all our wonderful hosts for their hospitality.

We have more events coming up and will be posting out our Summer Autumn events programme to our members later this month.

IGS members receive advanced notice, special prices, and preferred places on our tours and trips.

There are still a few tickets left for next month's Bloomsday walking tour with Arran Henderson of Dublin Decoded: Talks, Tours & Treasure Hunts of Dublin on the 17th June

'How to cross Dublin without passing a pub (a Joycean puzzle!)' will be a lengthy but highly entertaining walk from the Unitarian Church on Saint Stephens Green, right across Dublin to Stoneybatter and Arbour Hill. All while seeking to avoid passing a single pub!

During the walk Arran will discuss churches, quaysides, barracks, prisons, literature, and more. Please note that this is not primarily a “Joycean tour” but rather a tour of history and architecture, with a title (and route) inspired by the musing of Leopold Bloom.

Every year the Irish Georgian Society awards two academic scholarships - the Desmond Guinness Scholarship and John Maiben Gilmartin Award - to further the study of Irish architecture, decorative arts, and designed landscapes.

The Desmond Guinness Scholarship, named after our co-founder, is awarded to an applicant or applicants who are not yet established at an advanced professional level in research or publication and are engaged in research on the visual arts of Ireland including the work of Irish architects, artists and craftsmen at home and abroad, 1600-1900.

The John Maiben Gilmartin Award, named for the noted historian, is for an applicant or applicants who are engaged in research on the history of Irish art, architecture, and designed landscape, and of culture and society in Ireland during the long eighteenth century. It is intended for scholars who have completed a PhD within the last seven years.

The 2025 Desmond Guinness Scholarship has been awarded to Mary Nevin who is researching the Eighteenth-Century chimneypiece industry in Britain and Ireland (see image 3).

The 2025 John Maiben Gilmartin Award has been given to two candidates, Deirdre Cullen whose research topic is 'Neoclassical sensibilities and the creation of the all’antica painted decorations in the Long Gallery, Castletown House, Co. Kildare' (see image 1), and Siobhan Osgood whose subject is 'The Evolution of engineering draughtsmanship and the Ireland's influence over the creation of the French railway network' (see image 2).

Sirius Arts Centre Update

A key feature of our current conservation works on the Sirius Arts Centre is the usage of appropriate materials.

The new annex roofs have been clad in natural slate as closely matched as possible to the original slate that was used (see image one), replacing the previous old fibre cement slates.

The canon rooflights (see image 2), part of the original building design to be reinstated, are a true blend of the original and the modern. These distinct rooflights were detailed using historic photographs combined with more modern building materials and methods.
