BREAKING NEWS 🔔

Commenting on this evening’s news that the Taoiseach and Tánaiste are to vote in favour of the Sinn Féin bill to abolish the three-day wait before an abortion, Eilís Mulroy of the Pro Life Campaign said:

“Many people who voted Yes in the 2018 referendum did so following assurances from people like Micheál Martin and Simon Harris that the three-day wait would be an integral part of any new law. Their decision today to renege on that assurance – particularly so soon after the referendum – represents a massive breach of trust with voters.

“Both men know that close to 11,000 abortions take place in Ireland every year and that over 60,000 abortions have happened since the law changed in 2019. Abortion now ends the lives of 1 in every 6 babies in Ireland. It is deeply regrettable that both leaders have refused to listen to women who regret their abortions and feel betrayed by the State for failing to ensure they were properly informed about alternatives to abortion and the supports available should they have chosen to continue their pregnancy. Not only have Micheál Martin and Simon Harris failed in this regard, they are now going one step further by supporting the removal of the life-saving three-day wait.”

Ms Mulroy continued: “Tens of millions of euro in taxpayers’ money have been spent on abortion over the past six years, while no public funding goes towards promoting alternatives. Against that backdrop, the argument that the Sinn Féin bill should proceed to committee stage simply as a matter of routine procedure rings hollow. This is not an ordinary bill. It deals with matters of life and death. At what point, we have to ask, are TDs going to stop facilitating abortion and start working to reduce Ireland’s soaring abortion numbers?

“We are most grateful to the members of the Oireachtas who have spoken out against this bill, and we urge all TDs to vote No at Second Stage tomorrow.”

In 2018, voters were told that a 3-day waiting period would be part of Ireland’s abortion legislation.

That commitment was presented as an important safeguard during the referendum campaign and formed part of the framework put before the public.

The proposed Sinn Féin Bill seeks to remove this measure. If Fine Gael TDs support the legislation, they will be departing from a key assurance given to voters in 2018.

The three-day waiting period provides time for reflection before a life-altering and irreversible decision. We believe this safeguard should remain in place.

🚨URGENT: Contact your TD before Wednesday’s vote🚨

With Ireland facing so many pressing challenges, it is concerning that Sinn Féin Ireland is pushing to remove the 72-hour reflection period before an abortion.

Since repeal, more than 60,000 abortions have taken place, and reports of coerced abortions continue to emerge. The 72-hour reflection period is a vital safeguard. Between 2019 and 2024, over 10,000 women did not attend their second abortion appointment - showing how important this time can be.

Please take one minute to message your TD today and ask them to vote against this Bill. Time is running out before Wednesday’s vote 👉 prolifecampaign.ie/messageyourtd/

What was interesting about the debate between our spokesperson Eilís Mulroy and Louise O'Reilly TD from Sinn Féin this morning on Newstalk was the reaction from the public after the piece. It's clear that there is little public appetite to remove the three day reflection period before an abortion.

It's perplexing as to why Sinn Féin and others are pushing the removal of a 72 hour wait before an irreversible and life-ending decision. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This bill must be roundly defeated at second stage. If you haven't already contacted your TDs to ask them to vote against it please do so today right away - either through a personal call or email or using our instant messaging facility here 👉 prolifecampaign.ie/messageyourtd

With all the problems we have in Ireland today, its perplexing why Sinn Féin Ireland are continuing to prioritise more abortion! With 60,000 abortions since and many cases of coerced abortion now coming to light in Ireland, they want to remove the last remaining safeguard for women and their babies. A 72 hour period of reflection is a very reasonable measure before making an irreversible life-and-death decision. We know that over 10,000 women didn't attend the second abortion appointment (between 2019 and 2024) so there are many mothers in Ireland today for whom that period of time was key to their decisions.

It's really important that your local TDs hear from you before this vote on Wednesday.

Take a minute to send them an instant message here asking them to vote against this life-ending Bill and share this message with others.

Lord Moylan’s Complications from Abortions (Annual Report) Bill, which received its First Reading in the UK House of Lords on Tuesday, is a welcome attempt to bring greater transparency to the issue of abortion complications.

The Bill would require the Secretary of State to publish an annual report on complications arising from abortions in England, including overall complication rates, rates by age, abortion method and gestation, as well as complications arising from parts of an unborn baby remaining in the mother’s womb after an abortion.
