Today is World S*xual Health Day.
S*xual health isn't just about physical wellbeing, it's about consent, dignity, autonomy, and the
right to make choices about your own body, free from coercion or harm.

For people who have experienced s*xual exploitation, those rights aren't a given. Exploitation
strips away choice. It replaces consent with coercion, and autonomy with control.
Every body deserves s*xual health and rights, not just in principle, but in practice. That means
recognising when those rights are being denied, and standing with the people they are denied to.

Ruhama supports all people, regardless of background or circumstance, with free, confidential support every step of the way.

We talk about survivors. We talk about the trauma, the routes in, the barriers to getting out. We
talk about traffickers, pimps, the networks that profit from exploitation.
What we talk about far less is the person standing quietly behind all of it: the buyer.
Every transaction in the s*x trade has two sides, but only one of them tends to make the
headlines. The other walks away unnamed, unquestioned, and largely unseen by the media, by
policy, sometimes even by themselves.
Demand doesn't announce itself. It looks like ordinary life. It is rarely framed as a choice with
consequences for someone else’s life.
When we discuss the s*x trade we need to consider all elements. Ruhama works from this
premise: that ending exploitation means looking at every actor who sustains it. Prostitution
exists because there’s a demand for it. S*x purchase is the activity that makes s*x trafficking
profitable. Women bodies are commodified only because men are willing to buy them as
commodities.

OnlyFans looks like a platform where anyone can build a fortune. But this is not the reality
A small number of creators at the top do very well. Almost everyone else is left splitting what is
left over. It is often for far more work than it looks like from the outside. Filming, editing, constant
messaging, staying available around the clock, none of it shows up in the headline numbers.

And for creators trying to earn more, the push often isn't to work smarter. It's to go further, making more extreme content, having less say over where it ends up, and very little to show for what is being given up.
Easy money was the pitch. For most people, it isn't the reality.

Sharing knowledge. Building solidarity. 💛

Earlier this month, Ruhama's Kim Haugh travelled to South Kolkata to join a peer-to-peer workshop with CAP International's EXIT partners.

Kim shared learning from our Bridge to Work programme, which supports women affected by s*xual exploitation as they prepare for and move into employment. The workshop also created space for partner organisations to exchange knowledge, compare approaches, and learn from each other's experiences on the ground.

Different countries, different contexts, but the same commitment to challenging s*xual exploitation, together.

Thank you to CAP International and the EXIT partners for such a warm welcome and for this rich exchange.

But AI can now build one, fusing a real face onto a fabricated body, convincingly enough to threaten someone with it, blackmail them, or coerce them into silence.

Under Irish law, this isn't a grey area. Sharing, distributing, or even threatening to distribute an intimate image without consent, including an AI-generated one, is a criminal offence.

The technology is new. The intent behind it is not. It's the same pattern we've worked to disrupt for over three decades: threats used to silence, shame used to control, fear used to exploit.

The UN has told the Irish Government it has serious concerns about the new Housing Act.

Under this legislation, a family's access to social housing support can hinge on one household member's residency status. That means whole families could be locked out of safe housing over paperwork.

We see where gaps like this lead. When people, especially women, migrants, and survivors of trafficking can't access housing through safe, legitimate routes, exploitation moves in to fill the space. "S*x for rent" isn't a fringe issue. It's what happens when housing insecurity meets desperation, and it's a reality we work to prevent every day.

From where we sit, this isn't just a housing policy question. Secure accommodation is one of the strongest protective factors against exploitation.

Control can hide behind a login.

The growth of online content platforms has created the illusion of new pathways to income and independence but also very new real mechanisms for control. A shared password. Content dictated by someone else. Earnings redirected away from the person who earned them.

This kind of exploitation often leaves no visible trace. It can be framed as "management," "protection," or "help" making it harder to identify and harder to name.

At Ruhama, we work with women affected by exploitation, including control that takes place through digital platforms. Recognising how control adapts to new technology is the first step to understanding it.
