For White Cane Safety Day, let’s help make everyday journeys safer and more accessible for people with sight loss. Keep pathways clear, give people space, and be mindful around crossings. Small acts of awareness can make a big difference.

For White Cane Safety Day, let’s help make every journey safer: keep pathways clear, give people space, and don’t assume someone can see you. Small acts of awareness can make a big difference.

A busy day in TU Dublin as we join the Sight and Sound Technologies exhibition celebrating all things Assistive Technology. We have a stand from 11 showing off our DigiCoach Project, our Insight support service and some accessible coding projects we are working on. We will be attending a Community Hub on Assistive Technology talking about assistive technology and research. We will also be meeting with the PPI Ignite team as we are a local partner with TU Dublin. This event is part of Ireland’s Presidency of the EU.

What if the future of sight loss looked different?

For someone living with an inherited retinal disease, the possibility of protecting their remaining vision means more than science can put into words. It means holding on to the moments, independence and experiences that make life what it is.

Today, researchers are exploring gene-agnostic therapies that aim to protect retinal cells, regardless of the underlying genetic cause. This could open new possibilities for people living with different inherited retinal conditions.

Behind every breakthrough are researchers, clinicians, families and people living with sight loss, all working towards a future where more possibilities exist.

This World Sight Day, we're reminded that the treatments of tomorrow depend on the research we support today.

Because behind every research breakthrough is the possibility of changing someone's life.

Help us continue funding vital research and bringing hope closer to reality.

Did you know?

You don’t need to have blurry vision to benefit from an eye test!
Regular eye tests are recommended every two years, even if your vision seems perfectly fine.

A simple eye examination can do more than check how well you see - it can help detect certain eye conditions early, sometimes before you notice any symptoms.

And if you have PRSI contributions, you may be entitled to a free eye examination every two years through the PRSI Treatment Benefit Scheme.

Your eyes deserve a check-up too.
Have you had your eyes tested recently?

Book your next eye test and give your vision the care it deserves!

Inherited retinal diseases can affect children from birth, sometimes impacting their vision from an early age.

Recognising signs such as difficulty seeing in dim light, frequent tripping or sensitivity to bright light can help families seek appropriate eye care.

At Fighting Blindness, we support research into inherited retinal diseases, working towards better understanding, diagnosis and treatment options.

Fighting Blindness attended the 26th Annual EURETINA Congress, held in Vienna, Austria from 1-4 October 2026. One of the world’s largest retina meetings, the congress was a fantastic opportunity to learn about the latest developments in the field, connect with colleagues, exchange insights and build new relationships.

Our Research Manager, Dr. Bisola Aloba said: "I'm delighted to have been part of this inspiring gathering and look forward to bringing these new insights into our work”.
