📣 Commission Opportunity: Age & Opportunity and Clare County Council are inviting applications for a new music commission for a Clare-based musician aged 50+, offering a bursary of €15,000 to support the creation of an original work that will premiere at the Bealtaine Flagship Festival 2027 in Ennis.

The commission seeks to celebrate the creativity, artistic ambition and contribution of older artists, while creating a lasting cultural legacy as Clare prepares to welcome audiences from across Ireland for the national festival.

💡💬 TALKS at "The Future of Music in a Changing World" Public Conference:

In our morning session, we welcome Dr Stephen Graham to present "Canary in the AI Coalmine: New Music and Authorship in the Age of AI". Stephen's talk explores how we think about agency and authorship in new music making, which already includes established practices like collaboration and curation, and how this can be instructive in how we think about creativity and consciousness in relation to AI.

Dr Stephen Graham is Head of the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences, and Professor of Music at University College Cork. Stephen's monographs include Sounds of the Underground (University of Michigan Press, 2016) and Becoming Noise Music (Bloomsbury Press, 2023). Stephen is also co-author of a multi-generic history of twentieth century music for Cambridge University Press, Western Music in the Twentieth Century (2022).

“The Future of Music in a Changing World” is presented by CMC in partnership with the Music Composition Centre at Trinity College Dublin and Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Research Institute and takes place as part of the IAMIC - International Association of Music Centres Annual Meeting and Conference.

📣 Call For Proposals: Feis Ceoil Larchet Choral Commission
⏰️ Closing Date: Midnight, 31 August 2026.

Feis Ceoil in association with CMC invites proposals from composers born or resident in Ireland for the Larchet Choral Commission 2026/27.

The Larchet Choral Commission is a set competition piece for post-primary school choirs, commissioned by Feis Ceoil with support from the University of Notre Dame's Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies.

Composers are invited to submit a proposal for a new, original work for SATB choir of 3-3.5 minutes in duration, using text from the Irish language poem 'Teilifís' by Gabriel Rosenstock.

One composer’s proposal will be selected for the commission, and they will receive an award of €2300.

The commissioned work will be distributed to participating choirs for rehearsal and preparation for the competitions from November 2026, and will be premiered by competing choirs during the Feis Ceoil competitions in March 2027.

🎶 Next weekend: Chamber Music on Valentia returns from 13 - 16 August on beautiful Valentia Island, Kerry! Experience lunchtime chamber performances, family concerts, music trails, late-evening sessions and more across the island.

🌳 Our programme highlight is Saturday's 'Trees and Tales' featuring Darragh Morgan (violin), Adrian Mantu (cello) and Mary Dullea (piano). This late-evening concert is inspired by folklore, forests and the natural world, and includes world premieres by composers Murrough Connolly and Amy Rooney, alongside recent pieces by Seán Ó Dálaigh and Nick Roth.

🗓 Central to the annual meeting is a one-day public conference: "The Future of Music in a Changing World” on Thursday 10 September in partnership with the Music Composition Centre at Trinity College Dublin at the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Research Institute.

The public conference brings together new music artists, academics and advocates from the intersecting worlds of music, AI, sustainability and activism to explore some of the key challenges facing music communities in Ireland and internationally.

What's it like to take part in the CMC/DMARC Sonic Arts Residency at UL's world-class electronic music studio?

Irish composer Elis Czerniak shared a testimonial from his experience earlier this year:

"The residency gave me the time and headspace to fully immerse myself in developing a new work. Having access to the studio, microphones, and analogue synthesisers made experimentation/improvisation easy, but the greatest gift, which is one of the hardest entities to find nowadays, was the physical and mental space to think, listen, and create without distraction."

Kilkenny Arts Festival presents the world premiere of Michael Gallen's new opera 'The Curing Line'.

Winner of the prestigious Fedora International Opera Prize, 'The Curing Line' explores themes of healing, loss of culture and environmental collapse through the story of Cora, a young woman who inherits a life-saving ancestral healing power but loses her ability to use it.

'The Curing Line' is co-directed by Michael and long-term collaborator Shawn Fitzgerald Ahern and conducted by Clara Baget, with libretto co-written by Michael and poet Annemarie Ní Churreáin. Set and Costume design is by Pai Rathaya, Sound design by Simon Cullen and Lighting Design by Yukiko Yoshimoto.
