At 8 years old, Davis was falling behind at school — and no one could work out why.

A cataract had been growing in each eye. Dense enough to cloud his world entirely. In class, he couldn't read the blackboard. He covered his eyes just to focus, and bent low over his books to write. At home, the struggle followed him.

"I couldn't see my food or even tie my shoes," Davis said. His mother watched and prayed for a miracle to save her son's sight.

Through CBM's support, Davis was seen at Mengo Eye Department in Uganda, where surgeons removed the dense cataracts from both eyes. The operation gave him his sight back — and a new start.

Today, Davis is back at school, confident and keeping up. "You have brought joy to my family," his mother says.

Because of CBM supporters, Davis's future is bright once more.

At just six years old, Suman has already known what it means to be left behind. Born with bilateral clubfoot in Nepal, his twisted feet made every step painful — and slowly, the things other children took for granted slipped out of reach.

He stopped going to school. He couldn't play with his friends. His parents, daily wage workers, simply couldn't afford the treatment he needed.

"We wished for him to walk like other children," his father shared.

Through a CBM-supported hospital, Suman underwent surgery and a series of plaster cast treatments. Step by step, his feet began to straighten — and so did his world.

"Now I can walk, play, and even go to school again," Suman said.

At just three years old, Nakisinde had already begun to lose her place in the world. Bilateral cataracts had left the little girl from Uganda nearly blind — her days filled with shadows, her play hemmed in by what she couldn't see.

She couldn't move around confidently. She couldn't run to her friends. Simple things — fetching something for her mother, finding her footing on familiar ground — were slipping out of reach.

Through surgery at Mengo Eye Department, supported by CBM, Nakisinde's sight was restored. Her mother saw the change almost at once.

"She runs to play with friends now and brings me things without help," her mother shared. "Her eyes can see, and her smile is brighter than ever."

At her follow-up visit, doctors confirmed significant improvement. Glasses may be part of her future, but her vision journey has already begun — and the world she once knew only in shadows is opening up.

Because of CBM supporters, Nakisinde's future is bright once more.

At just 8 years old, John was losing his sight to bilateral cataracts. Reading, playing, focusing in school — all of it slipped further out of reach with every blurred day.

His family lived day-to-day on his father's on-call welding jobs. Surgery was out of reach. "We prayed every day that someone would help John," his mother shared.

Through a CBM-supported programme, John's cataracts were removed and his vision restored. A month after a condition that threatened to leave him blind, he could see clearly again.

Today, he's back in school, thriving in maths, and dreaming of becoming an engineer. "Now I can read small letters and play with my friends," he said.

Because of CBM supporters, John's future is bright once more.

At just 11 years old, Barnabé from Ambositra, Madagascar has already faced more than most children should. For years, bilateral cataracts blurred his world — colours unclear, details out of reach.

At two, he had surgery on his left eye. But by ten, cataracts had developed in both eyes. He couldn't focus at school, and eventually he had to stop going altogether.

"After waiting months to save money, we finally made it to the capital," his family shared.
Through CBM's paediatric ophthalmology unit, Barnabé received successful surgeries on both eyes — and his sight was restored.

Today, he's heading back to school and back to the games he loves. "Now I can go back to school and win at marbles!" he said.

Because of CBM supporters, Barnabé's future is bright once more.

This Easter, as the world thinks about hope in the midst of darkness, we are reminded of the story of Mariya nd Ikilima, who at just 3 and 6 years old were at risk of growing up blind.

Their mother knew something was wrong—but like so many families, she couldn’t afford the treatment they needed.

Because of CBM supporters, they received life-changing surgery. Now, they are seeing, learning, and exploring the world with confidence.

At just six years old, Isabelle’s world was already fading. Born with cataracts in both eyes, her vision worsened from the age of two, making it difficult to play, move around, or recognise what was in front of her.

As her sight declined, everyday life became more challenging. She bumped into objects and struggled to take part in activities other children enjoyed. Her mother sought medical help, but the cost of travelling for surgery was far beyond what the family could afford.

Through CBM’s Mahita Pediatric Project, Isabelle was able to receive free cataract surgery at SALFA hospital. Her parents brought her for treatment, holding onto hope that her sight could be restored.

Today, Isabelle can see clearly again. She’s playing with friends, taking part in school, and growing in confidence every day.

Because of CBM supporters, Isabelle’s childhood has been restored.
