ILCU International Development Foundation We are people helping people. Together Building Financial Inclusion.

As the international development arm of the Irish credit union movement, we support credit union development in low-income developing countries, providing financial and technical support to local partners. The Foundation shares the Irish credit union experience to help develop and strengthen credit union movements in Ethiopia, Sierra Leone and The Gambia. Our work is only possible thanks to annual

donations from credit unions across the island of Ireland, individual donations, corporate supporters and external donors.

The Foundation had a fantastic two days in the RDS Dublin at the Irish League of Credit Unions Conference and AGM. It was a great chance to reconnect with everyone, discuss our work, and most importantly, thank Irish credit unions for their continued support. We even had a great opportunity to meet and share about our work with former World Boxing Champion Barry McGuigan!

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by our stand over the two days. It was fantastic to see so many of you in Dublin!

In Ethiopia, the Babile Woreda Cooperative Section and Burqa Gudina SACCO Union (Savings and Credit Cooperatives) delivered a capacity-building training for Uriji Jalala RuSACCO leaders in Babile Woreda. The training brought together 22 participants, including 15 women, reflecting the project's strong focus on women's leadership and economic empowerment.

Uriji Jalala RuSACCO (Rural Savings and Credit Cooperatives) is a rural savings and credit cooperative working to expand access to affordable, interest-free financial services for its members, particularly women engaged in livestock trade, small businesses, agriculture, and farm product marketing.

The training focused on strengthening SACCO governance, savings and credit management, financial product rollout, loan appraisal and approval processes. The overall objective was to prepare Uriji Jalala RuSACCO for the rollout of new women-friendly financial products under the Achieved Women's Finance and Economic Empowerment project. This initiative marks an important step toward strengthening women-led cooperative finance and promoting inclusive economic empowerment in rural Ethiopia.

The Foundation, alongside the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU), with support from the African Confederation Of Cooperative Savings and Credit Associations(ACCOSCA), and funding from the Climate Finance Fund, hosted by the European Climate Foundation have worked on a new initiative that is helping Kenyan SACCOs launch climate-focused savings products designed specifically for diaspora members.

The initiative was implemented between July 2025 and April 2026, with the Foundation serving as lead partner and WOCCU leading technical design and implementation.

More than 3 million Kenyans living abroad send billions of dollars home each year. These funds play a critical role in supporting families and local economies; they have historically lacked dedicated pathways for investment in climate mitigation and resilience. This pilot addresses that gap by enabling diaspora members to channel their savings directly into climate-related projects in their home communities.

โ€œThis initiative reflects the very best of what the global credit union movement stands forโ€”people helping people. With the support of Irish credit unions, the ILCU Foundation is proud to help connect diaspora communities with meaningful climate action at home, turning everyday savings into a force for resilience, sustainability and shared prosperity.โ€ Alan Moore, ILCU Foundation.

On their third day in Ireland, the Moldovan delegation had the opportunity to travel to visit credit unions. The first stop was Ardee Credit Union to meet with Niall Lambert, CEO, and Mags O'Keefe, who shared the credit union's history, current operations and its community engagement work. Whilst in Ardee, the group also had the opportunity to meet with Therese Conway and Niamh Kieran from Collaborative Finance CLG to hear more about Cultivate.

In the afternoon, the delegation travelled to Castleblayney Credit Union, where Patrick Conlan, CEO and team, met with the group and shared information about Castleblayney Credit Union. There were insightful discussions, and it was interesting to hear about the shared experiences and knowledge between the two credit union movements.

Speaking about their time meeting with the credit unions, Efim Lupanciuc, Executive Director of CNASCA, said, "We want to take forward what we have learned in Ireland in the last few days. We have been encouraged to meet with the credit unions and hear them speak of their dedication to cooperation and to their communities, and how they support them. We look forward to continuing to learn more and sharing our learnings in Moldova."

Many thanks to both Ardee Credit Union and Castleblayney Credit Union for hosting the groups. The discussions were very engaging, and the delegation really appreciated your time, sharing your knowledge and the warm welcome. Thanks also to Therese and Niamh for an informative presentation on Cultivate.
