We are people helping people. Together Building Financial Inclusion.

As the international development arm of the Irish credit union movement, we support credit union development in low-income developing countries, providing financial and technical support to local partners. The Foundation shares the Irish credit union experience to help develop and strengthen credit union movements in Ethiopia, Sierra Leone and The Gambia. Our work is only possible thanks to annual donations from credit unions across the island of Ireland, individual donations, corporate supporters and external donors.

Well done to Niamh Penrose from North Midlands Credit Union, who is joining us for the upcoming Great Ethiopian Run in November. On International Credit Union Day, she hosted a bake sale at the credit union to raise funds for the challenge, raising over €1,800. Great job to Niamh and her team of bakers!

We're so excited to have a team of 16 travelling to Addis Ababa this November for the Great Ethiopian Run! The team will take on a fantastic challenge while also seeing some of our work in Ethiopia.

Several of our team have been working hard on their fundraising, and we want to thank everyone who has donated so far.

As part of our Great Ethiopian Run 2026, two of our team members, Rebecca Brunton Chartered MCIPD and Mark Johnston from the ILCU are hosting an evening of music featuring a selection of vocal stylings. All proceeds from the night will support their fundraising efforts. Rebecca and Mark are travelling to Ethiopia to support the ILCU International Development Foundation's work with credit unions and communities in Ethiopia.

Today and every day, we celebrate the credit union movement's work worldwide. The global credit union movement is now more than 400 million members strong, and they are served by more than 61,000 credit unions in 93 countries.

The Foundation shares the Irish credit union experience to develop credit union movements and ensure more people in Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Tanzania are financially included.

This year's theme for International Credit Union Day is "Cooperative Finance: A Steady Signal in a Noisy World”. At the Foundation, we know the value of cooperation and the importance of locally led development to ensure sustainable development and access to affordable finance.

The Foundation collaborates with local partners to develop credit unions that foster financial inclusion, ultimately contributing to a better future for all. We share the Irish credit union experience, empowering our local partners to strengthen credit union movements in countries including Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Tanzania, helping people save, access affordable loans, and build a better future for themselves and their families.

We want to recognise the Irish credit unions who continue to support our work, because credit unions are all about 'people helping people'. The Foundation's work embodies the credit union movement's philosophy, principles, and ethos. Credit unions can help build financial inclusion for all by providing much-needed access to affordable and ethical financial services.

This is especially important today, as it has been announced that credit unions have been voted Number One for Customer Experience for a record-breaking eleven years - 2026 Customer Experience Insight (CXi) Report.

Congratulations to credit union staff and volunteers nationwide on this incredible achievement. And thank you again for your continued support of our work.

We all know the value of having a credit union in our local community. Credit unions are not-for-profit financial institutions grounded in the cooperative values of equality, mutual self-help & equity. In a world full of uncertainty and constant change, credit unions remain a steady signal: rooted in trust, people, and community. Just as many strands make a rope strong, pooling resources to benefit members is central to our philosophy of people helping people.

In Sierra Leone, credit unions in the Western Area attended a Regional Credit Risk Management Refresher Training facilitated by Esther Bangura, Head of Monitoring, ILCUF. The training focused on strengthening credit risk management practices and building credit unions' capacity for sustainable growth.

The Foundation plays an essential and critical role in educating people and developing credit union movements internationally, providing safe and ethical financial solutions for communities. Our work supporting these credit unions is only possible because credit unions across Ireland support the Foundation. The Foundation was delighted to be involved in supporting the 22nd Credit Union Development Education (DE) Europe programme in Dublin. The residential programme brought together 40 participants from across the world, including Tanzania, Kenya, The Gambia, Poland, Germany, the USA, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland

The Credit Union Development Education (DE) Europe programme aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of cooperative principles, the philosophy behind the credit union movement, and the local and international development issues currently facing credit unions.
